June 24th, 2010

Today’s top 5 is directed towards iPhone 4 users who want to take full advantage of their new hardware and software. From shooting zombies, to finding your way around town, to keeping yourself entertained on the go, iPhone 4 really does have plenty of apps for all of that. Just like our other top 5 must-have iPhone app posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full run down, follow us after the break!

Twitter for iPhone

What would this top 5 list be without a great social networking application, so of course our top honor would have to go to Twitter for iPhone [Free - iTunes Link]. Discover what’s happening right now in the Twitter universe from all over the world with this application. With a killer UI you get all of the top notch features such as realtime search, top tweets, trending topics and maps. Tweet, send DMs, share photos, videos and links to your friends and the rest of us. And it’s now multitasking friendly.

Alternatives: Facebook for your friends, [iTunes Link - Free], LinkedIn for your colleagues [iTunes link - Free].

Angry Birds

Angry Birds [iTunes Line - $.99 - Free version] is currently the number one paid application in the whole App Store and deservingly so. Angry Birds features hours of gameplay, challenging physics-based castle demolition, and a lot of replay value. Each of the 120 levels requires logic, skill, and some enemy destruction. If you like physics-based games and puzzles do yourself a favor and spend the $.99.

Alternatives: If sending birds through the air to destroy things is not your cup of tea then by all means try Farmville [iTunes Link - Free], Flight Control [iTunes link - $0.99], or Plants vs Zombies [iTunes link - $2.99].

Pandora Radio

If you are a avid Pandora user than look no further than the official Pandora Radio application for iPhone [iTunes Link - Free]. The latest update takes full advantage of iOS 4 with the ability to stream music in the background while using your iPhone 4. Simply create a free account if you do not have one already and log in. In no time you’ll be streaming your existing stations or ones you create on your own.

Alternatives: Slacker Radio offers service in the US and Canada [iTunes link - free]. Anyone know what happened to the Spotify update for our EU friends?

Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies

Call of Duty and shooting zombies, does it get much better than that? Not really so it was a no brainer to include a little first person shooter title – Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies [iTunes Link - $9.99] Sure this title is a bit on the expensive side for a iOS game title but it’s brings a lot to the table. With this game you will be able to witness some of the best graphics, sounds, and controls available today for your iPhone 4. Fans of the FPS genre will not be disappointed.

Alternative: Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies 2 [iTunes Link - $9.99] If you own part one you can purchase part two at a discounted price with a in-app purchase. If cars are more your scene, try Real Racing [iTunes link - $4.99]

TomTom Navigation

Last but not least your iPhone 4 is in need of a top of the line GPS navigation application such as TomTom [iTunes Link - US version - $49.99]. With a slew of options and full and up-to-date map is stored on your iPhone 4. This means no cellular signal or data plan is needed to navigate to your destination or even look at maps. Now throw in TomTom’s advanced lane guidance and IQ Routes technology and you have yourself one sweet GPS application. Advanced lane guidance shows you which lane to take at confusing junctions so you don’t miss your turn and IQ Routes technology is what TomTom uses to collect actual speed data from the millions of users to calculate the fastest routes at that particular point in time. So factors such as rush hour, traffic lights, school crossing, train tracks, etc all come into play to calculate the fastest route to get to your destination.

Alternative: Navigon North America [iTunes Link - $79.99] is still waiting on its update, but you can also purchase US maps in 3 different sections – each costing $29.99. If online maps and lower-cost monthly subscriptions are more your thing, try TeleNav powered AT&T Navigator [iTunes link].

Conclusion

Well there you have them, our top 5 iPhone 4 apps to get you started. Be sure to check out our iPhone App and Games Forum for more of our members’ recommendations, and leave yours in the thread — or in the comments below!

Top 5 iPhone travel apps

April 17th, 2010

tipb_top_5_travel

Today’s top 5 is directed towards iPhone users who travel for work, for fun, or for a little bit of both. From booking to preparing, finding your way to finding your food, and keeping yourself entertained while go, the iPhone really does have plenty of apps for all of that. Just like our other top 5 must-have iPhone app posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full run down, follow us after the break!

TripIt

Tripit [free - iTunes link] is an iPhone front-end to the free TripIt.com online service. With TripIt, once you book your online hotel and flight information, you just forward them the email and they automagically create a itinerary for you include flight times, airport maps, hotel maps, etc. Basically, all you travel has belong to them — but they’ll package and present it to you in a hyper convenient and consolidated manner.

If you’re a hardcore traveler, TripIt.com also provides a pro version with added functionality.

TripIt

Alternative: WorldMate [free - iTunes link] or [$14.99 - iTunes link], recommended by Alli.

Appigo Todo

Making a list and checking it twice isn’t just for Santa’s once-a-year trip, it’s for everyone who needs to keep track of what to pack, where they want to go, and what they want to see. Appigo’s Todo Lite [free - iTunes link] is a great starting point for task and list manager, and if you need more, there’s a full version of Todo [$9.99 - iTunes] with a feature set that syncs with just about everything.

Appigo Todo

Alternatives: If you prefer to keep your lists in note-taking apps, check out our top 5 iPhone note apps roundup!

AT&T Navigator or NAVIGON MobileNavigator

If you’re driving rather than flying, turn-by-turn navigation and your sense of direction is anything other than perfect, turn-by-turn navigation is a must and there are two major types for you to choose from — online vs. on-device and subscription vs. paid outright.

AT&T Navigator [subscription - iTunes link] provides online maps and if you only need them for a summer road-trip through areas with good AT&T coverage, you can pay $9.99 grab it and go. (Powered by TeleNav, you can find other carrier-branded versions, like Rogers Navigator in Canada, in international App Store).

AT&T Navigator

If you’re going off-grid, however, you’ll have to go offline and NAVIGON provides everything from the 1.5GB North America [$79.00 - iTunes link] to (for example) just the US East Coast ($29.00 – iTunes link]. They have a variety of international versions as well.

MobileNavigator

Alternative: whmurray recommends the built-in Maps app, which isn’t turn-by-turn but is GPS-enabled and powered by Google.

ZAGAT To Go

Yes, it’s complete overkill and yes, there are a numerous free/cheap ways to find restaurants with your iPhone but once in a while when you’re traveling you just want to do it in style and that’s ZAGAT To Go [$9.99 a year - iTunes link]. You get ratings and reviews from ZAGAT’s famous guide, and an offline mode so you can download it all to your iPhone, iPod touch (or iPad — it’s a universal binary!).

ZAGAT To Go

Alternative: Yelp [free - iTunes link] was suggested by Jamesus.

iPod

It’s built right into your iPhone and iPod touch (separated as Music and Video) and can keep you entertained with music, audio books, TV shows, movies, and podcasts everywhere from the airport to the airplane, hotel to restaurant. You can either transfer your own media from home before you leave or use the iTunes Store app to buy and rent the latest from Hollywood or download the best free content on the go. When Apple said the iPhone was the best iPod they’d ever made, they weren’t exaggerating. (Sure, the iPad gets 10 hours of video out of its battery, but it’s still not easy to pocket as the iPhone!)

iphone_30_ipod_spotlight

Alternative: If you’ve got a SlingBox at home and want to keep up with your local sports teams or favorite shows while you’re out of town, SlingPlayer Mobile [$29.99 - iTunes link] will transport your TV to your iPhone anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or 3G signal.

Conclusion

Well there you have them, our top 5 iPhone travel apps. Did we many any of your favorites? Be sure to check out our iPhone App and Games Forum for more of our members’ recommendations, and leave yours in the thread — or in the comments below!

TiPb Top 5 iPhone Notes Apps

March 6th, 2010

top_5_notes_apps

Today’s TiPb Top 5 is directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love to take notes/memos on the go. Just like our other TiPb’s top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full run down, follow us after the break!

Notes

Okay, all the applications are available in the App Store but this one — Apple’s Notes is built-in and comes pre-installed on every iPhone and iPod touch. And it’s not bad. Harkening back to the old PalmOS Memo app, you can add a note, start typing, hit Home, and the Note is automagically (and persistently) saved. That’s right, no explicit user action is needed — not even to name it as Notes just pulls the first line and uses that as the name. You can add new notes, edit old notes, and delete what you no longer need. You can also sync Notes via iTunes now (though not via MobileMe… get on that, Apple!)

Set up to look like a yellow, legal-esque note pad, the only drawback is the almost universally panned use of the Marker Felt font. If you can stand that, it’s simple but it’s free and you don’t even have to download it. For some users, that’s all they’ll ever need. For me, it’s perfect to jot down a hotel room, phone number, parking space, or anything else I want to remember and keep with me.

iphone_30_notes_landscape_keyboard

Simplenote (and Notational Velocity + DropBox)

Simplenote [Free - iTunes link] came to our attention via Daring Fireball’s John Gruber and has stayed there thanks to the Notational Velocity awesomeness highlighted by 43Folders‘ Merlin Mann.

Simplenote by itself is just as the name implies, quick, clean, and highly usable. Instead of tethered iTunes sync over USB, Simplenote offers secure wireless sync to the cloud (their WebApp). You can keep using it free with fairly unobtrusive adds, or for $8.99 a year (less than $1 a month) you can go “premium” which removes the ads and gives you auto backup (versioning), create by email, an RSS feed, unlimited API use, and some cherries on top like early access to future features.

If you’re a note ninja, however, combining Simplenotes with Notational Velocity could dang-near blow your mind. Notational Velocity is a desktop client that offers modeless operation (search is your gateway), incremental search (start typing, it starts filtering), and keyboard-optimized operation. DropBox can store the data/files so you can enjoy not only iPhone to desktop, but cross-desktop sync as well. Getting things done indeed!

This is pretty much the nuclear option when it comes to note-oriented productivity, and the scaling from just Simplenote to the cross-platform sync solution is impressive. If you’re the high-order geek and notes are where your life lives, this combo can be hard to beat.

Simplenote

PhatNotes

PhatNotes [$9.99 - iTunes link] is a big, bold drought of note taking. On the surface, it’s covered in icons and colors. Under the hood you can organize “thousands” of notes in folders and groups. It also supports handwriting recognition so you can scribble your note on the screen and Phatnotes will OCR it and turn it into editable text. (A process which works pretty well (and yes, internet, it does OCR and print curse words without any censorship).

You can sync PhatNotes for iPhone with the PhatNotes for Windows desktop client (no Mac client… yet?). Given the price tag, PhatNotes will most likely appeal to hardcore on-device users who want to do as much as possible on their mobile, especially if they already use PhatNotes on the PC and see the sync as a bonus.

For those who like the handwriting recognition but don’t want the higher price and fuller organizational features, the same developer offers WritePad [$1.99 - iTunes link] PhatNotes for iPhone

Appigo Notebook

Appigo’s Notebook [$4.99 - iTunes link] earns a spot immediately simply by virtue of its integration with the excellent Appigo Todo, but proves its own worth with clever offline/online note sync handling, password protection for secure notes, Toodledo.com sync, and TextExpander [$4.99 - iTunes link] support.

The user interface is simply gorgeous and the workflow is quick and easy. Notebook isn’t free but it’s not premium priced, it’s not bound to the desktop or the cloud, and if you’re invested in Toodledo, TextExpander, and/or Appigo Todo… well, you likely have it already! If you don’t, and you want a flexible yet elegant note-taking solution, give it a look.

Appigo Notebook

Evernote

We’re not just including Evernote [Free - iTunes link] so that Chad (and Leo Laporte) don’t smack us around for not including, though that’s certainly a plus. Evernote is literally — and iconically — the big elephant in the note-space. Unlike the apps above, Evernote isn’t primarily focused on traditional, text-based note taking. It puts pictures and voice right up front alongside text. What’s more, it will make text included in your photos searchable (though it won’t OCR that text and make it editable — please ad?)

You can sync Evernote for iPhone with Evernote for Windows or Mac, or for other mobile devices running Android or BlackBerry OS. If the free functionality isn’t enough for you, you can “go premium” for $5 a month or $45 a year. Premium gets you 500MB of monthly upload bandwidth, support for Office docs, PDF, and videos, share and collaborate with other premium users, and SSL encryption.

Evernote is a great choice for people who want to include a wider range of material and basically scrapbook their notes as they go. It’s also especially handy for cross-platform users with different desktop and mobile platforms. If you’re not already using a different cloud-based or desktop solution, Evernote is something to check out. Evernote for iPhone

Conclusion

iPhone and iPod touch users are fortunate to enjoy a wide range of high quality note apps, everything from the built-in to tons of App Store downloads (we barely scratched the surface here!), from free to premium, from cloud-based to desktop-bound. Which one is best for you will depend on what, if anything, you’re already using and what functionality matters most to you.

If we didn’t mention your favorite, or if you have any ninja or pro tips to share to take our iPhone note-taking to the next level, let us know in the comments!

Mega Man 2, Earthworm Jim, Myst, Golden Axe, Secret of Monkey Island — TiPb’s Top 5 Retro Games!

February 24th, 2010

tipb_top_5_retro_games

Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love their classic, retro games. Just like our other TiPb’s top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full run down, follow us after the break!

Mega Man 2

mega_man_2_1

Originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988, Capcom’s Mega Man 2 ranks in as one of the greatest retro games ever made. This iPhone version is a pretty close port of the Nintendo original. The game features the same simple graphics from the original version along with the 256×256 pixel playfield. Controls are handled via a virtual onscreen joystick and two buttons. The biggest negative that some of you may not like is the game’s difficulty — or lack there of. It’s pretty easy to get through this one, especially when compared to the original.

  • Utilize virtual arcade controls to control the blue bomber.
  • Rebalanced gameplay for the iPhone experience.
  • Battle your way through 14 levels, and conquer 9 unique bosses, each with a unique weapon!
  • Bringing the original classic NES game to the palm of your hand

mega_man2_2

Mega Man 2 [iTunes Link] is available now in the App Store for only $.99 but hurry as this price may soon change!

Earthworm Jim

Earthworm-Jim_2

Initially released on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo back in 1994, Earthworm Jim broke new ground in 16-bit gaming and we are happy to say the Gameloft iPhone version holds up pretty well. No corners were cut with this one as everything that makes the original a classic is here. — nice crisp graphics, excellent sound and good controls.

  • Run, gun, swing from hooks with your head, launch cows, bungee jump, rocket through speed levels and more!
  • Face 12 types of enemies and 9 bosses.
  • 4 different styles of gameplay: Side-scrolling run & gun, space racing, bungee jumping and underwater levels
  • 10 original environments divided into 16 levels
  • 4 levels of difficulty, including the challenging mode of the original game
  • The re-mastered cult soundtrack
  • iPod library access to play your favorite tracks while playing the game.

earthworm_jim_1

Earthworm Jim [iTunes Link] is currently available in the App Store for $4.99.

Myst

myst_1

Myst was one of the first games to be put on a CD-ROM in 1993 and back then it simply awed gamers around the world. With the iPhone version of Myst you not only get an exact replica of the original but you get it improved graphically. Yes, the iPhone version of Myst is visually more impressive than the PC/Mac counterpart.

  • All the original Ages & gameplay
  • High quality images (better than original Myst)
  • Full music & sound effects
  • Original movies & animations
  • Auto-save (when quitting or phone call)
  • “Bookmark” system to save & restore progress
  • Swipe to turn
  • Auto-zoom in certain close-up areas
  • Quick access to hint guide
  • Works with iPhone 3G, the original iPhone, and iPod touch.

myst_2

Myst [iTunes Link] is available in the App Store on sale for $4.99.

Golden Axe

golden_axe_2

Sega’s 1989 classic 16-bit game Golden Axe is available for your iPhone. Those of you familiar with the original will feel right at home as it’s a exact replica of the Genesis version. You pick one of three characters -a powerful Fighter, a female Amazon, and a mighty Dwarf. Each have different strengths and magical powers, and your mission is to battle through dark castles, on the back of a giant turtle, and even on the wings of an enchanted eagle to challenge the Death-Adder. Along with your sword and axe, you can hop on the backs of the Bizarrians and use their fierce attacks like fire breath and tail whips.

Those of you who do not own a iPhone 3GS may want to avoid this as there are reports of it being a bit sluggish on the older models.

golden_axe_1

Golden Axe [iTunes Link] is available in the App Store for $4.99.

Secret of Monkey Island

monkey-island-iphone-wallpaper-full

This remake of the 1990 classic PC title Secret of Monkey Island weighs in at a hefty 351MB and it is worth every single byte. If a brilliant story, great visuals and good controls are what you look for in a game, this one’s is for you. Some reviewers complain about the controls but we did not have any major gripes. Sure they could be improved but this very well may be the best version of this LucasArts classic.

  • An all new re-imagined contemporary art style
  • Complete voice over by members of the original Monkey Island™ franchise cast
  • A re-mastered musical score using live instruments
  • Plus, scene-for-scene hot swap to seamlessly transition between Special Edition and Classic modes at anytime

monkey_island

Secret of Money Island [iTunes Link] is available in the App Store for $7.99.

TiPb Top 5 iPhone Puzzle/Gem Switch Games!

January 14th, 2010

tipb_top_5_gem_games

Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love puzzle games where the goal is to take similarly colored shapes or objects and get them into a group, causing them to be removed from play. Just like our other TiPb top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. I’ve always been quite fond (understatement!) of these types of games, and while the variety is endless, the top 5 I currently enjoy can be found after the break!

Bejeweled 2

Bejeweled

I used to play Bejeweled on my PalmOS PDA and Bejeweled 2 was one of my first games I got on the iPhone. Simple and fun, it’s a classic and the template for all gem switch games which have followed it. A set of jewels is placed in a grid and you can switch any two jewels horizontally or vertically. If you are able to make a group of three or more matching jewels then your set disappears and all the jewels are refilled from above. The level ends when you have completed your quota of chains or if the timer runs out.

Bejeweled 2 is available for $2.99 [iTunes Link]

Stoneloops! of Jurassica

Stoneloops

[Note: Stoneloops was pulled from the iTunes App Store due to a copyright claim. Hopefully it will go through arbitration and be back in the store soon. It's included here because it was so much fun, and so many enjoyed it.]

In Stoneloops, you have a chain of colored stones which move along a track. The object of the game is to shoot additional colored stones into the chain to make a link of three or more. If you can make all of the colored stones disappear before the train gets to the end of the track then you get to go to the next level. There is also another type of play called, grab-n-shoot, where you can take a stone from the moving chain to then re-add it to another location, to make a colored chain.

After you complete a number of levels you are rewarded with an upgrade to your “home”, which matches the theme of the levels. You couldn’t really do anything with the home, and it didn’t affect the game at all, but it was a nice trophy of sorts.

When I first played Stoneloops I played it for so long that I actually got iPhone burn on my index finger (don’t laught, I know there are others out there!). If and when we find out it is back up in the App Store we will let you know.

Trism

Trism

Trism was one of the first games made specifically for the iPhone to achieve a huge level of success. Gameplay is very similar to Bejeweled but instead of moving the pieces horizontally or vertically the pieces move on diagonals. If you make 3 or more similarly shaped pieces match they disappear and are replaced by other pieces. In a nice touch, the direction you tilt your iPhone is the direction the pieces slide. Trism also has the added feature of achievements that you gain if you have completed a particular challenge like removing a locked or explosive piece.

Trism is available for $2.99 [iTunes Link]

Jewel Quest 2-in-1 Treasure Pack

Jewel Quest II

Jewel Quest 2-in-1 Treasure Pack, as the name suggests, is actually two games for the price of one — Jewel Quest II and Jewel Quest Deluxe ! (It’s also a great technicality that lets me get around the limit of only choosing 5 games!)

Jewel Quest takes the basic Bejeweled concept and adds a twist. Not only do you need to arrange similarly colored jewels but when you do the square beneath that jewels changes colors. You need to change the whole board to another color in order to pass the level.

In Jewel Quest II, you have to turn all the background playing field squared to gold and this occurs each time you make 4 or more of a kind. This increases the difficulty level of the game and makes you have to think ahead in your selections. The game becomes increasingly difficult with each level, introducing more gem types and board shapes. Some gems are even buried and force you to figure out, through trial and error, its matching partners.

Jewel Quest Deluxe is not quite as difficult as Jewel Quest II but has much more variety and more polished graphics. Each level asks you to complete a different task. It may be to collect a number of colored gems or make the whole board turn gold, it may also have you compete against a computer opponent.

Some games have found a way to interweave an interesting storyline into the game, one that not only relates to the puzzles but adds to the playing experience. Well, Jewel Quest is not one of them. The story in this game is pretty much a bunch of words that interrupts the flow of the game. I can however, overlook this small annoyance because the game is so very addicting!

Jewel Quest 2-in-1 Treasure Pack is currently available for a special price $0.99 [iTunes Link]

Puzzle Quest Chapters 1 & 2

Puzzle Quest 1&2

While Puzzle Quest still uses a Bejeweled-type of game board, it’s a bit different from the usual puzzle game as it merges RPG and puzzle elements. The story in the game surrounds your character and the puzzle game is the manner in which you battle your opponents. You also can choose different character classes and these will change the kind of powers you get to use in the game. Gold star, Puzzle Quest!

While this is one of my favorite puzzle gem/switch games, I should point out It’s not the best port to the iPhone. It does have some spacing issues, and at times some users haves crashes but it’s so much fun I keep coming back for more.

Puzzle Quest is available for $4.99 [iTunes Link]

Conclusion

There you have it, TiPb’s Top 5 Must-Have iPhone puzzle/gem switch games. Did we miss any of your favorites? Overlook any amazing gem-game gems? Drop us a comment and let us know your list!

TiPb Top 5 iPhone Cooking Apps!

December 25th, 2009

tipb_top_5_cooking

Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love to cook. Just like our other TiPb top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full overview, follow us after the break!

Epicurious

Epicurious

Epicurious is a cooking app with over 25 000 recipies, a shopping list and ratings from others who have tried the meals. If you are going to pick just one cooking application, Epicurious would fit the bill. A vast array of recipes to choose from allows for a lot of versatility in the kitchen. It may not make you Gordon Ramsay, “You Donkey!”, but it will help you to impress your loved ones.

The full page advertisements are a bit distracting but the application is free.

Epicurious is available for free [iTunes link].

Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner

All recipies

Allrecipies.com Dinner Spinner is a cooking app with a bit of a twist spin (Sorry couldn’t help myself). Boasting 1000’s of recipes Allrecipes.com allows you to pick your meal, ingredients and how long you want to spend cooking it (No “zero minutes” option, though — I checked!). The great thing about this app is that you also get to see the ratings and comments of others people who have tried the recipes. This lets you know about variations/suggestions for the meal. You can also turn on filters for vegetarian, gluten-free and other special diet restrictions.

A great overall cooking application

Allrecipies.com Dinner Spinner is available for free [iTunes link].

Jamie Oliver’s 20 Minute Meals

Jamie Olivers 20 minute meals

Jamie Oliver’s 20 minute meals gives the user a “personalized experience”. It’s is more costly than most cooking apps but it makes up for it with an sleek look intuitive feel. Jamie also gives you over an hour of videos on topics such as Knife skills, how to make the perfect steak, and how to properly use your cutting board. It’s just like having Jamie in the kitchen with you. Each step in the recipe comes with a picture. It also gives you an easy-to-use shopping list. All of the recipies are installed in the application so you don’t need to connect to the internet. The one negative to this application is the lack of recipes, with only a a bit over 50 included (though you can access more recipes via integration with Jamie’s website).

This application is especially great for those who enjoy Jamie Oliver’s cooking techniques.

Jamie Olivers 20 minute meals is available for 7.99 [iTunes link]

Look and Taste

Look and Taste

Look and Taste is an application that gives you plenty for your money. Its clean interface allows you to seamlessly pick which recipes you want to cook. Many recipes also have video included on how to cook the meal (as opposed to other applications that only use video to show you some tips). There are also videos on various glossary terms, food items and chef tips. The recipes can be chosen by cooking time, difficulty, ingredients and main ingredient.

The application is jammed packed with information for cooks of all levels and is well worth the price tag..

Look and Taste is available for 4.99 [iTunes link].

iFood Assistant (by Kraft)

iFood Assistant

The application has a clean interface and easy to navigate controls. You choose your recipe by the kind of meal you want to prepare (either snack, breakfast, entrée etc), and then your main ingredient. The use of product placements in the ingredients list is a bit disconcerting but they’re easily replaced by whatever brand you prefer. (The strange craving for Cheese Wiz that come with them, somewhat less so!)

Browse recipes, watch the cooking videos or try out the budget wise section, it also gives you tips on how to shop on a budget (US only). You can organize the recipes by prep time, reviewer rating, total time or name. This makes finding a quick meal fast and efficient. The application has over 40 cooking videos, which give you tips, but the video quality is low. The recipes range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, so there’s a bit of everything. (Though it’s not quite up to the standard of the other apps in this list).

iFood Assistant is available for $0.99 [iTunes link].

Conclusion

There you have it, TiPb’s Top 5 Must-Have iPhone cooking games. Did we miss any of your favorites? Overlook any amazing food finds? Drop us a comment and let us know your list!

  • BlueAnt Q1
  • Plantronics Discovery 975
  • Jawbone Prime
  • Motorola H17

BlueAnt Q1

blueant_q1_1

We are going to start off with my current personal favorite headset, the BluAnt Q1 voice controlled stereo Bluetooth headset. [$99.95 - TiPb Store Link]

Out of all of the headsets I’ve tested, the Q1 is by far the only one I could leave on a full work day and not even realize I’d be wearing it. It is also one of the very few headsets that gets updates via firmware with the latest update enabling stereo Bluetooth along with some other small features. And top it off with top of the line audio quality and you have yourself an excellent choice of stereo Bluetooth headset.

Be sure to check out our full review of the Q1.

Plantronics Discovery 975

discovery_975

I will admit that I am currently testing this headset and will be posting a full review in the coming weeks and without giving you my full impressions I will say the Plantronics Discovery 975 [$119.95 - TiPb Store Link] is indeed a quality headset.

Not only do you get the simplicity of one-touch controls, dual-mic AudioIQ² and WindSmart technologies to keep your conversations crisp and clear you also get a portable carrying case that doubles as a wireless charger on the go which is really a nice touch. Again, a full review is coming but definitely a headset worth picking up!

Jawbone Prime

jawbone_prime_hero

Next up we have a headset that Rene put in such high regard with his full review a few months back, the Jawbone Prime. [$109.95 - TiPb Store Link]

The main selling point of the Jawbone is it’s top of the line noise cancellation, aka “NoiseAssasin”. No other headset on the market gives you better noise cancellation. And to top it off you get a plethora of colors to choose from – black, platinum, green, brown, yellow, purple, and red. To top it off they are all in stock in our store. Double bonus.

Motorola H17

moto_h17

The Moto H17 [$89.95 - TiPb Store Link] is Dieter’s choice of Bluetooth headset and for a few good unique reasons.

There are those times where you need to run out of the house along with your headset but you forgot to plug it into the charger the night before, good thing the H17 has a rapid charge feature. 15 minutes of charging gets you a bit over 2 hours of talk time. Now throw in Moto’s “Crystal Talk” technology for incoming sound quality and you have one heck of good headset. This is a headset you can not go wrong with.

Motorola MOTOROKR S305

moto_s305

Now the Motorola MOTOROKR S305 [$49.95 - TiPb Store Link] is not your typical Bluetooth headset, for the money they are the best wireless stereo headphones currently available for purchase.

Sporting great sound they are extremely lightweight and fit comfortably with the out of ear 1.2-inch ear pods. The S305 is perfect for those looking for a wireless headphone solution to bring to the gym or even if you want to enjoy your music lounging around your home. Get an incoming call while listening to your music, not a problem

For more information be sure to check out our full review.

If we happened to miss your favorite Bluetooth headset and you feel it deserves a nod, feel free to share it in the comments for others!

TiPb Top 5 Must-Have iPhone Accessories for New Users

December 2nd, 2009

tipb_top_5_accessories

The following Top 5 Must-Have iPhone Accessories for New Users guide is sponsored by the TiPb iPhone Accessory Store

Just got a new iPhone? Congratulations! Now it’s time to decide if you need a little something extra to go along with it — a case to protect your investment, Bluetooth for wireless phone calls or music, headsets for wired, batteries and chargers to get you powered, and cables to keep you connected.

There are lots to choose from, enough to personalize your iPhone just the way you want, but if you’re having trouble deciding, we asked TiPb’s editorial staff to pick some of their favorites. Check them out, after the jump!

Cases

Cases come in all shapes and sizes, from the full-on armor of Matt’s favorite, the Otterbox Defender to the barely-there BodyGuardz skin. If leather is your thing, check out Jeremy’s pick, the Sena Elega Pouch, or if your prefer silicon like Leanna, try the iSkin SoloFX. And if you want to combine a charger into your case, James still loves him his mophie Juice Pack air.

Bluetooth

If you just want a Bluetooth headset to use while you drive, or for some walk-and-talk, Dieter is currently going gaga over the Motorola H17. Jeremy is likewise enthralled with the Blueant Q1. If you’d rather have it on your visor than in your ear, Chad likes the Blueant S1 while Rene has been driving with the frenemy, BlackBerry VM605-style. Now if you want to rock stereo music with Bluetooth, the Motorola S9-HD is still turning heads.

60205424564353294142

Headsets

The iPhone and iPod touch come with Apple’s trademark earbuds but for those with ears that like to listen different(ly), or just better, Rene likes the iharmonix Platinum i-Series, and Dieter’s given the thumbs up to the v-moda vibe duo. If all you need is an expensive backup or replacement buds, however, Smartphone Experts has you covered.

520032093035

Sync’ers and Chargers

Everyone, and we mean everyone, loves the Griffin Power Duo charger. And again, if you just want a second sync/charge cable, Smartphone Experts has one that’s perfect, and perfectly inexpensive.

51952663

Mounts and Cradles

Still not enough? Well, if you want to mount your iPhone in the car (for turn-by-turn navigation, or to use with a Bluetooth Stereo device perhaps?), the iGrip Custom Fit is always popular. If the desk is where you dwell, then the Seidio Inno Dock is Rene’s pick — and it’s friendly to most cases!

TiPb Top 5 Must-Have iPhone Accessories for New Users

TiPb’s Top Five First-Person Shooting Games!

November 26th, 2009

tipb_top_5 FPS

Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love First-Person Shooting (FPS) games. Just like our other TiPb’s top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full overview, follow us after the break!

Wolfenstein 3D Platinum

Wolf3D

Wanna kick it old, old school? Wolfenstein 3D (Wolf3D) started it all. What is great about this version of the game is that you get A LOT of levels. You get episodes 1-6 plus the Spear of Destiny add-on pack for a total of more than 60 levels. Wolf3D has customizable controls and a super-fast framerate. This is a great version of the original and a bargain price. [$1.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Old school fun
  • Customizable controls
  • So many levels!
  • Fast and smooth gameplay

DOOM Classic

DOOM

Ah, DOOM — one of my all time favorites. The iPhone version is top-notch. Fast and fun. The controls have been tweaked a little more than with Wolf3D, but are similar. If you can play one, you will be instantly at home with the other. DOOM takes the Wolf3D premise and adds a grand 3D element to it. Mars is invaded by devils from hell and it is up to you to eradicate them over 36 levels. Future updates in include Doom 2 with in-app purchasing! Doom as multiplayer support over local Wi-Fi, but sadly, no online deathmatches are planned at this time. [$6.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Just the way I remember it
  • Customizable controls
  • Fast gameplay
  • Totally fun!

Eliminate Pro

Elimiate

One of the most anticipated apps for the App Store, Eliminate has arrived! This illustrates what mobile online multiplayer can be about. This game revolves around playing matches and winning; that simple. The catch is having “energy” when you play. If you win a match (or actually play a match) with energy you earn credits. Credits are used to buy weapons, armor and stats. After your energy is depleted, you can buy more with in-app purchasing, or wait 90 minutes (the time keeps changing as ngmoco:) finds the right balance) for a partial energy recharge. You can play over the Internet with Wi-Fi or 3G. A new map is on its way, but no word on voice chat. [$Free - iTunes Link]

  • Internet multiplayer
  • Upgradable weapons and armor
  • Friend lists
  • Private matches with friends

Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies

COD Zombies

This game was a surprise that came out of nowhere! Like shooting zombies WWII Nazi-style? Well, look no further than Call of Duty: Zombies. You are in a room with boarded entrances. Zombies are closing in on every side. What do you do? destroy them of course! You can buy different weapons and choose from a few different control styles. This game gets tough fast, but in the end is hampered by a less-than-accurate control scheme. I have faith this will be fixed in a future update. You can play single player or multiplayer locally. Sadly there is only one map right now, but more are coming soon! [$9.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Top-notch graphics
  • Erie atmosphere make playing it stressful!
  • Continuous onslaught of zombies to kill
  • Local multiplayer

Modern Combat: Sandstorm

Sandstorm

Looking for a FPS with a good challenge? Sandstorm will give it to ya! This is not a run n’ gun game, you have to use strategy defeat the relentless AI. This game has great controls and graphics. You can crouch, zoom, carry two different weapons plus grenades; all intuitively with fun. You are placed in the Middle East set to take down the bad guys. What is the big news about this game? There is an online update coming out before Christmas 2009 that will add  Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes! This looks to be an amazing addition onto an already solid single player title! [$4.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Great control scheme with lots of functionality
  • 10 different missions
  • Great visuals  and story
  • Very challenging compared to other FPSs on the App Store

Conclusion

The graphics and gameplay for 3D games on the iPhone is really heating up. With so many good games, it is hard to pick a winner. Out of this match-up, in their current state, I have to choose Eliminate Pro. The reason? Awesome online multiplayer action. I think once Sandstorm gets its update, it will be a real viable contender; for single player, it wins hands-down. Being able to play against anyone, anywhere is always better than bots. Because if this, Eliminate Pro wins by a landslide. Hey, and it’s free :-)

Winner: Eliminate Pro

There you have it, TiPb’s Top 5 FPS Games. Did we miss any of your favorites? Overlook any killer shooters? Drop us a comment and let us know your list, and your winner!

TiPb’s Top Five First-Person Shooting Games!

TiPb’s Top 5 iPhone Racing Games — Second Annual Grand Prix!

November 12th, 2009

tipb_top_5_racing_games

Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love racing games, and It’s a follow up to last years TiPb Grand Prix. Just like our other TiPb’s top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. For the full overview, follow us after the break!

Real Racing

Real Racing

I am biased, this is without a doubt, my favorite iPhone racing game. If you like simulation-style handling in your racing games, you will love this game. There are no real cars (other than the Volkswagon GTI) or courses. However, the attention to detail in-car and on the track is the best you will see on the iPhone. Now, with a new lower price [$4.99 - iTunes Link], you can’t go wrong with Real Racing!

  • 4 classes
  • 12 tracks
  • Local Multiplayer
  • Video replays on YouTube

Asphalt 5

Asphalt

Looking for a deep arcade racer on the iPhone? Look no further than Asphalt 5! There are plenty of “real” cars to choose from and lots of tracks. You can earn the ability to customize the look of your car too. The action is fast and pure arcade. The graphics have a “glow” to them, literally but are still good. Looking for an adrenalin rush, this is it! [$6.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Over 30 real-world cars
  • 12 tracks
  • 8 different racing events
  • Local Multiplayer

Rally Master Pro 3D

Rally

If you like the challenge of rally racing, then this is the only rally game to get in the app store! Plenty of cars and over 27 varied tracks! The controls seemed a little sluggish to be using the accelerometer, but I got used to them. Your car takes real-world damage as you drive (in one instance my hood flew off!) and you can repair your car in-between races. The weather simulation is great in the game too; rain and snow, and a voice navigator, it’s all there! [$4.99 - iTunes Link]

  • Variety of game modes
  • 27 varied tracks
  • Weather enhancements
  • Online leaderboards

Need for Speed Undercover

NFS

NFSU was one of the first games to have “next-gen”graphics on the iPhone. These graphics still hold true today! There are some fun innovations to like a slo-mo bullet time and auto-acceleration. You have some nice customization features for your car from spoilers to ground effects, not to mention color and vinyl. There is also a storyline to keep things interesting! $4.99 – [iTunes Link]

  • 20 real cars
  • 8 race modes
  • Performance upgrades
  • Slow-motion effects

2XL ATV Offroad

ATVLooking for something different? ATV Offroad might be for you! smooth framerate and killer graphics make this one a keeper! The standout feature in this racing game is the ability to do tricks and achievements! Tricks can be done by tilting the device forward and backward while combining 6 preset stunt moves accessible on the screen. Couple this with some local Wi-Fi multiplayer and let the good times role! [$7.99 - iTunes Link]

  • 16 tracks
  • Career mode with achievements
  • 8 opponents on screen
  • Local Multiplayer

Conclusion

All of these game are great and well worth the price of admission. However, for what it has to offer, I have to go with Real Racing as my winner this year. I prefer the “real” style of racing. Though, it is not Gran Turismo, for a mobile game it is close enough for me. If this game was not available, second place would go to Asphalt 5. NFSU is close, but Asphalt ups the anti with its Burnout-like gameplay.

Winner: Real Racing

There you have it, TiPb’s Top 5 Racing Games and our 2009 Grand Prix Winner. Did we miss any of your favorites? Overlook any killer racers? Drop us a comment and let us know your list, and your winner!

So if you’re interested in taking beautiful, high quality panoramic shots, be sure to pick this one up!

With TiltShift Generator, you can add a very natural blur to your photos to bring non-subject matter out of focus and adjust contrast and saturation to really make your photos pop. Look no further than TiltShift Generator to satisfy your depth of field generating needs.

Modern Combat: Sandstorm

ModernCombat_1

Gameloft has really stepped up into one of the leading developers for the iPhone platform with 35 game titles. Their latest game, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, definitely does not disappoint. When I played Modern Combat: Sandstorm I immediately thought of the popular console franchise Call of Duty. And that alone speaks volumes.

  • Use a wide range of authentic, advanced weapons (2 assault rifles, sniper rifle, RPG, shotgun, submachine gun, light machine gun, heavy machine gun mounted on a moving 4X4, explosive grenades, flashbang grenades, radiation detector) enriched with a leveling system that allows the player to progressively unlock weapons and use munitions from fallen foes
  • Highly polished 3D graphics provide full immersion into the military experience and high intensity combat
