Apple Magic Trackpad/Magic Slate coming at WWDC? Make a nifty Apple TV controller?

June 7th, 2010

Could WWDC 2010 finally bring the Magic Trackpad/Magic Slate — essentially a large, flat surface with iPhone/iPad-like capacitive multitouch input — to the Mac? Whether it will support the full range of gestures that the iPhone and iPad do, or the currently more limited range supported by the Magic Mouse and new Mac Book Pro trackpads is unknown.

Rumors of the Magic Trackpad/Magic Slate date as far back as the Magic Mouse last October, and while this leak (if real) means we might actually see it soon, it would also mean Apple takes time away from their even more iPhone-centric WWDC 2010 to focus on Mac peripherals (and if they do, will new Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and MacBook Air get some attention as well).

Before anyone asks — no idea if it will pair via Bluetooth to an iPad or iPhone running iPhone OS 4. But it sure would make a nifty lower-cost next generation Apple TV controller…

A couple more pics after the break!

Apple to debut Safari 5? Xcode 4? How about Apple TV on iPad? Pre-WWDC crazy!

June 6th, 2010

WWDC 4 billion apps downloaded - photo by Adam Jackson

I’m sitting here at the airport waiting for my flight (or the first leg of my flight rather, grrrr!) to San Francisco for WWDC 2010 and catching up on the latest, greatest, coolest, and craziest rumors to hit the web — namely Safari 5, a new version of Xcode, and more.

Safari on the iPhone and iPad is typically ahead of the curve when it comes to supporting Apple’s version of (still emerging) HTML5 and CSS3 standards, and their Nitro Javascript engine, but desktop Safari typically leads the way in terms of cool features like local RSS, Top Sites, etc. According to Macgenerations Safari 5 looks to increase that lead:

  • Safari Reader (does that remove Google ads for that “calmer experience”, I wonder?)
  • 25% faster Javascript rendering
  • Bing as a search option. (Enemy’s enemy, indeed!)
  • Dozens of new HTML5 features including Geo Location, full screen video, captioned video, section elements, AJAX history, EventSource, WebSocket, draggable elements, and more. (Begun these Flash wars have).
  • Improved developer tools.
  • Smarter address field
  • Improved tabs settings
  • Hardware acceleration for Windows
  • Easier Top Sites/Full history switching,
  • Private browsing (aka porn mode) icon for easier on/off
  • DNS pre-fetching and improved page caching
  • XXS auditor
  • Faster running JSON (for better web apps).

MacRumors meanwhile hears Xcode 4 might get shown off as a “major update”.

Less rumor and more wishful, if awesome, thinking, Lonely Sandwich wonders if the “lame” Video app on the iPad is a precursor to it getting an Apple TV app as part of Apple’s next gen Apple TV, iTunes.com rollout. Now that would spectacular.

More MobileMe going free rumors

June 4th, 2010

mobile-me-free

With the WWDC 2010 keynote mere days away, more rumors continue that Apple’s push and sync solution, MobileMe, might just be going free. They’re thin, admittedly, but BGR points us to a change in how account type is shown — now “full member” is highlighted.

As opposed to free member?

We might just find out Monday, including what the differences are between “free” and “full” (or no change at all). We know you want it — because we want it too – so go head, conjecture in the comments!

Verizon rumored to be testing CDMA iPad

June 2nd, 2010

According to one of BRG’s “highly placed” sources, Verizon Wireless is currently testing CDMA-compatible iPads. Their source even went one step further and mentioned LTE with another possible iPad model though that could not be confirmed.

So with all of the Verizon rumors flying around as of late it looks as if we will see both the iPad and iPhone in the hands of Big Red faithful sooner or later.

Is anyone out there regretting picking up a AT&T compatible iPad right about now?

AT&T stores preparing for next-gen iPhone arrival?

June 2nd, 2010

If you are looking for even more next-gen iPhone hype you’ve found it as BGR has learned that AT&T currently may be preparing for the arrival of a new Apple device.

“AT&T has started to send engineers out to corporate store locations to try and plan / start setting up a “new kind of display.”

While the likelihood of this display being for the new iPhone it may be possible that AT&T is prepping to finally sell iPads in their corporate stores. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below!

Would you pay AT&T $13.99/month for MobileProtect iPhone insurance — with a $199 deductible?

May 29th, 2010

AT&T to offer MobileProtect iPhone insurance

BGR got their hands on a leaked AT&T document that purports to show a new iPhone insurance program called MobileProtect that will cost you $13.99/month and include a deductible of $199 for an iPhone 3GS 32GB. ($99 for the iPhone 3G 8GB)

You must enroll in the plan within 30-days of upgrading/purchasing a new iPhone. AT&T is launching this service as: “Lack of iPhone insurance is a leading source of iPhone related customer complaints.”

So does anyone think $168 a year is worth it for a little rebate and piece of mind? Deal or no deal?

Apple had safer iPhone G4 prototypes incase iPhone HD was delayed?

May 26th, 2010

Second iPhone HD/iPhone 4G prototype - back

Another page to be filed in our increasingly full “things analysts say which may or may not be so” drawer says Apple wasn’t sure whether or not the N90 “iPhone HD” prototype would be ready to launch and so had a safer, more iPhone 3GS-like N91 in the wings:

On a side note, Apple initiated the iPhone 4G project at the end of 2008. According to our sources, Apple actually has another product codenamed N91 for the project, which offers less change from previous iPhones compared with the N90. It’s a parallel product to back up the N90 in case there are major delays due to significant modifications in casing, display resolution, digital camera support and so forth.

That resolution being the 960×640 we’ve heard rumored for a while, which is a magic number exactly twice vertical and horizontal to the current 480×320 iPhone and iPod touch resolution at pretty much the same physical size. That means existing apps will look virtually identical while new apps look even sharper — no iPad-style chunky double fuzzies here. Likewise, if Apple wanted to introduce a larger, HTC HD2 or Incredible sized display later, that pixel density would still look great and still mean no work, no fracture for developers.

Other tidbits include:

  • No AMOLED as they cost 3x as much and suppliers simply couldn’t produce enough to meet the unit numbers Apple sells.
  • Apple A4 based on ARM Cortex A8 as the A9 won’t be ready until the end of the year, after the iPhone launch.
  • Probably 512MB of RAM, though Apple has requested tests on both 256 and 512. (Dear Apple, we’d really like 512 please).

Again, we never know how reliable any of this will turn out to be, but with WWDC so close, we’ll find out soon enough.

Apple stops shipping iPhone 3G to AT&T stores and Walmart drops price of iPhone 3GS

May 25th, 2010

With just two weeks to go before WWDC, Boy Genius Report is reporting that Apple has ceased shipments of the iPhone 3G to AT&T stores. Now throw in the fact that new orders for the device are not being accepted and it’s a pretty good sign the iPhone 3G’s days are numbered.

“Could this mean we might see the iPhone 3GS drop to $99 and make way for a new model? Or maybe the 3GS would disappear altogether? We’re not sure, but we’re about to find out.”

It’s a funny thing that BGR mentioned the price drop of the iPhone 3GS because as of today Walmart is dropping the price of the 16GB version to $97 with a two year service agreement. It appears as if the iPhone 3GS is about to replace the iPhone 3G as the budget iPhone. Keep an eye out for Apple to drop their price in two weeks…

And cue the iPhone HD/iPhone 4G on Sprint rumors

May 24th, 2010

Sprint_iPhone

With the iPhone HD/iPhone 4G just around the corner and all the talk about AT&T finally losing exclusivity, it only stands to reason rumors of Sprint getting the device would also start to grow louder.

Just like with Verizon and even T-Mobile’s funky GSM bands, we’re sure Apple could technologically do it, but whether or not they could come to financial terms — and more important when is less predictable. Sprint isn’t doing as well as Verizon or AT&T, however, so they might be far more open to the type of control Apple would insist upon to get the deal done.

If it does happen, count us among those who think a WWDC 2010 announcement is less likely, with AT&T getting a short period of exclusivity with Apple’s 4th generation iPhone, and other US carriers coming online in the fall, red, yellow, and perhaps even magenta all.

And if not, hey, Sprint’s still got that commercial to tide them over.

AT&T internet tethering finally arriving along with iPhone OS 4?

May 19th, 2010

Judging from the latest iPhone OS 4 beta that was released earlier today, it would appear AT&T may finally be gearing up to actually release internet tethering for all of their iPhone customers.

Under network settings in the latest beta you have a option that allows you to set up internet tethering. When pressed you are greeted with a popup that gives the options to call AT&T or send you to your online account to activate the tethering feature. There is still no official word from AT&T but if all goes well those of you who been patiently waiting for tethering may finally get your wish.

iPhone HD/iPhone 4G to sport 960×640 IPS/FFS panel, 512MB RAM, 24 million units

May 17th, 2010

Apple’s 4th generation iPhone HD/iPhone 4G could be set to launch with a print magazine quality 960×640 in-plane switching (IPS), fringe-field switching (FFS) display, and a beefy 512MB of RAM according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo the in hit-and-miss industry trade, Digitimes.

Rumors of a 960×640 display first surfaced back in March from Daring Fireball. Given Steve Jobs’ fondness for calligraphy and type and how much he’s pushed their aesthetics in the digital age finally shipping a display where the dots no longer come between content and eyes would no doubt appeal to him. IPS is the technology used in the new iMac and iPad, FFS in HTC’s Legend, and they help increase viewing angles and display quality. Resolution and technology would combine to make iBooks on iPhone the most high density, high quality type experience yet.

Further, they report Apple will stick with the ARM Cortex A8 currently found in the iPhone 3GS and iPad A4 SoC, not the multicore Cortex A9, but they’ll be doubling the RAM to 512MB which should be especially useful for the new multitasking API found in iPhone OS 4. That number does conflict with the 256MB analysis based on lost iPhone G4 prototypes, but Apple can and will make changes and decide final specs up to and until it goes into full production.

Oh, and Foxconn will ship 24 million of them starting in June.

Wal-Mart to carry iPad ‘Later this year’

May 14th, 2010

Bloomberg is reporting that Wal-Mart will begin offering Apple’s iPad to consumers at some point “later this year”.

“We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year,” Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment for Wal-Mart’s U.S. stores, said in a telephone interview. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company isn’t prepared to provide specifics on the timing and pricing of the iPad, he said.”

This really should come to no surprise considering Wal-Mart carries the iPhone. Currently iPad sales are limited to Apple’s online and retail stores and the certain Best Buy locations that offer the Apple shop sections. Apple did not have a official comment regarding any deal with Wal-Mart.

Our best guess is that you will see Wal-Mart selling iPads just in time for the holiday shopping season. Do you think this wishful thinking on the retailers part or is this going to happen? Sound off in the comments below!

Apple friending FaceBook for iPhone OS 4?

May 13th, 2010

steve-jobs-facebook

Rumor has it Apple could be increasing their Facebook integration for iPhone OS 4, perhaps to include contact sync and messaging support for end users and Facebook Connect for developers.

Apple’s relationship with social networks has been tentative at best, with Mac OS X 10.6 and iPhoto 09 offering rudimentary integration for things like photo tags. The Facebook app on the iPhone has done some contact syncing (initially with funny to off-putting results), but nothing thus far as hinted at Palm webOS or Microsoft Kin level integration.

Business Insider cites only a “source”, and coming as it does with Facebook once again in the eye of the user-privacy storm, it’s sure to be met with mixed reaction. Here’s why it might just happen:

Some 34.2 million people were “active users” of the Facebook iPhone app in the last month, according to Facebook. That’s about a little more than a third of all the iPhone OS devices — iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad — out there. And it’s almost 10% of Facebook’s 400 million users.

It’s one of the rare instances where Apple is way behind the consumer curve. They don’t “get” social media (perhaps their hyper-secretive corporate culture doesn’t allow them to) but they’re slowly and painfully realizing that if they don’t do something, they lose an element of user tie-in, and Apple certainly “gets” user tie-in.

Could Apple’s MobileMe be going free?

May 11th, 2010

MobileMe for iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC hero

There’s a rumor making the rounds that Apple’s MobileMe service could be going free “sooner than later… depends on certain facilities going operational.” (Perhaps a reference to the massive server facility Apple’s building in North Carolina.)

Introduced alongside iPhone 2.0 at WWDC 2008 to replace the previous .Mac, the current price tag is $99 for a single user and provides push email, calendar, contacts, iDisk, Galleries, and Find my iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for mobile users along with Back to my Mac remote file access and screen sharing, iChat accounts, and a host of sync services for Mac users. It’s enjoyed almost entirely incremental updates since then.

Competitors ranging from Google and Microsoft down to DropBox and Box.net offer similar services in whole or in part, and are either free or have basic levels that are free with optional payments for more storage or other premium services. And it’s very hard to compete with free.

It makes a lot of sense — from where we’re sitting at least — for Apple to adopt the same model. Give everyone the basic email, calendar, contacts, iDisk (though we’d prefer you just rip and replace it with DropBox), etc. for free, give the option to pay for advanced/high capacity services for those who want them.

And, hey, if that iPhone HD/iPhone 4G just happens to ship with a front-facing camera, and the new free version of MobileMe just happens to come with Mobile iChat video accounts, maybe iPhone owners will finally have something that makes BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) users jealous…

Again, just a rumor so keep renewing your MobileMe until Steve Jobs or Phil Schiller tells you it’s going free and Apple sends you a credit.

Would the iPhone on Verizon rumors kindly make up their modem-flipping minds?

May 8th, 2010

Rumors are saying the iPhone is coming to Verizon as soon as this summer. On LTE. Which follow rumors saying, due to AT&T’s iPad deal, iPhone on Verizon was pushed back to 2011. Which followed rumors iPhone on Verizon would be the “one more thing” at the iPhone OS 4 event. Which followed–

Enough. Since 2007 all we’ve gotten is rumor after conflicted rumor that the iPhone is coming out on Verizon later in the year, no in 2012, no yesterday, no….

Forget it. There’re almost certainly CDMA and LTE iPhones deep beneath Cupertino in the Apple labs, just as there were Intel Macs for years before they were released. Apple can release a CDMA or LTE iPhone whenever they feel like it. Verizon can put a CDMA or LTE iPhone on their network whenever they feel like. That is, whenever they’re contractually allowed to and come to a financial arrangement (which could be tomorrow, or never, getting the idea yet?)

In other words, we’ll believe it when Steve holds it up on stage.

Did AT&T iPad deal delay Verizon iPhone until 2011?

May 6th, 2010

apple-tablet-keynote_175

An analyst has suggested that AT&T provided those “breakthrough” cheap and flexible iPad data plans in exchange for a brief extension in iPhone exclusivity, delaying the launch of iPhone (or iPad) on Verizon until 2011.

Of course, with analysts we never know how much of what they say is based on actual information and how much is based on supposition, but here’s the crux:

“AT&T had to do something dramatic to get the iPad,” said Brian Marshall, a Wall Street analyst at BroadPoint AmTech. AT&T’s move was to discount their normal wireless data plans by 50% to iPad customers.

As part of the tit-for-tat, AT&T got what it wanted. “For that pricing [on the iPad], AT&T was able to negotiate a six-month extension on the iPhone exclusive,” Marshall said.

Rumors of AT&T outbidding Verizon aren’t new. Before the iPad, we heard Apple and Verizon had the technology in place but were apart when it came to money — not surprising with both companies being so utterly controlling. Still, many believed they’d work it out and 2010 was finally the year iPhone would hit Verizon.

Despite success with Android, Verizon continues to want the iPhone. Verizon users also still want the iPhone. We daresay, users of other networks (some of whom already have iPhones) want Verizon to get the iPhone.

All that remains is… the deal.

Next generation iPhone to support 720p HD video recording?

May 6th, 2010

The 4th generation iPhone looks like it will be able to do some high definition (HD) video recording according to the iPhone 4 Beta SDK. A little digging into the code reveals that there are two presets for recording resolution, the current 640×480 (VGA) and a 1280×720 (720p).

  • AVCaptureSessionPreset640×480
  • AVCaptureSessionPreset1280×720

Rumor: Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission jostling over inquiry into Apple restriction on cross-compilers

May 3rd, 2010

Steve Jobs iPhone iPad MacBook

Citing the usual “people familiar with the matter”, the New York Post claims the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commissions are negotiating over which one of their organizations will inquire into Apple’s new iPhone OS 4 SDK section 3.3.1 — the restriction against cross-compilers in general and Adobe’s Flash CS5 Packager for iPhone in specific.

It will focus on whether the policy, which took effect last month, kills competition by forcing programmers to choose between developing apps that can run only on Apple gizmos or come up with apps that are platform neutral, and can be used on a variety of operating systems, such as those from rivals Google, Microsoft and Research In Motion.

Which, while I’m not a lawyer or headline-seeking politico, doesn’t sound like anything remotely approaching actionable behavior. Inquiry doesn’t mean investigation, however, much less charges are pending. Apple could just as easily be absolved since they’re not a monopoly in smartphones and competition in the app space is thriving.

Neither the DOJ, FTC, or Apple is commenting yet, so this could also just be one of those test-baloons-via-media-attention. Steve Jobs has recently written on the issue of cross-compilers in general in his Thoughts on Flash open letter.

Apple believes cross-compilers aren’t in the best interests of their platform, and in the United States of America, absent monopolistic or other forms of illegal abuse, doesn’t Apple get to decide how they want to run their own platform? And aren’t developers equally free to vote with their apps and, if they don’t like Apple’s choices, develop for other platforms and take their user-bases with them?

Apple in talks to buy ARM?

April 22nd, 2010

iphone_3g_s_speed_force

ARM chips, including the current Cortex A8, power the iPhone 3GS, iPod touch G3, and form part of the A4 system-on-chip for the iPad — add that to some whispers and we get the full on rumor that Apple is in talks to buy them out.

Here’s where it gets really interesting — ARM chips power a slew of other devices as well, including those running Android and Palm.

Rumors of Apple buying desktop chipmaker AMD were floated earlier in the week, so who knows what if anything is really going on here, but tying up a major mobile CPU maker and locker out your competition must hold a certain appeal for Apple (whose already a major licensor of ARM). With $41 billion in the bank, even the likely $8 billion price tag isn’t out of the question.

We’re doubting it at the moment, but what do you think? They’ve already bought PA Semi and may have bought ARM design company Intrisity, and Google just bought Agnilux. Should Apple buy ARM outright?

UPDATED: No, this isn’t the iPhone 4G but could it be an iPhone HD prototype?

April 18th, 2010

iphone4main1

UPDATE: As commenters suspected, it’s a cheap clone/knock-off from China/Japan.

Engadget has some pictures of up of what’s purporting to be an iPhone 4G (which it can’t be because there aren’t any GSM 4G networks for it to run on), but could it be an iPhone HD (or whatever the iPhone G4 ends up being called) prototype of some sorts?

We’ve heard that Apple keeps prototypes in the basement, bolted to tables, but if someone was testing radio reception or otherwise had to get some on-the-go diagnostics… Still, given how losing this thing would no doubt be grounds for immediate, painful eradication by Steve Jobs’ omega beams, we just can’t see anyone at Apple letting it out of their sight.

Engadget says the guy who “found” it in a San Jose bar, inside an iPhone 3G case, is looking to get cash in exchange for hands on time, but that they’re working on more details.

Update: And the link to some TwitPics supposedly from a Chinese search posted on Feb 20.

AT&T blocks June holidays again — countdown to iPhone HD

April 16th, 2010

BGR claims AT&T has begun their yearly tradition of blocking employee holidays for the month of June in anticipation of the 4th generation iPhone (not iPhone 4G but possibly iPhone HD) launch.

A June block suggests a launch that could be as early as last year’s June 17 iPhone 3GS affair, but is also consistent with previous years’ late-June releases.

We’ve already seen some leaks — and lots of fakes and mock ups — so just consider this another sign of what we all know is coming — iPhone 2010. And the crazy is sure to come with it!

Regarding rumors of Adobe preparing to sue Apple

April 13th, 2010

iphone_flash_rumor_smasher

Just when you think the internet can’t take any more crazy it laughs, loosens its belt another notch, and unleashes something like ITWorld’s story about Adobe getting ready to sue Apple over the iPhone’s lack of Flash support or the iPhone OS 4 SDK prohibiting cross-compilers, or Canada winning Olympic hockey, whatever.

It’s not like the real news isn’t crazy enough right now, what with iPad and Adobe CS5 shipping and iPhone OS 4 getting previewed all within the last week or so.

Just what exactly is Adobe’s cause of action remains unaddressed, of course. Last we checked, being upset — even being righteously PO’d — isn’t grounds for legal action.

If ever Apple gains a true monopoly position in mobile and abuses that monopoly, then cases will no doubt be made (remember, you can have a monopoly, and you can be abusive, you just can’t be an abusive monopoly). Until that time, we get the feeling Apple is going to do everything they can to leverage their technology to get as far ahead of the mobile platform competition as they can. They’re going to go at a dead sprint, in fact, until they reach that very line. They want to be so far ahead by the time they have to worry about anti-trust and may be forced to switch gears, competitors will be too far behind to catch up.

Adobe’s only option is to do the same — take Flash further and faster than Apple takes the iPhone. Make it killer on the backs of Android or some other platform. That or sue Apple for patent violations if they have the portfolio stones, because as far as we can tell, there’s nothing involving the iPhone’s lack of plugin support or cross-compiler acceptance for them to sue over.

Of course, free enterprise means the freedom to sue just because, so ultimately who knows what Adobe will do. We’re not lawyers anyway, so if you are, correct us in the comments (pro bono, ‘natch).
