International iPhone 4 carrier plans and rates

July 29th, 2010

What you’ll pay for an iPhone 4 on Rogers/Fido, more to come!

International carriers are finally starting to release their iPhone 4 plans and rates, and as more countries now have multiple providers and unlocked iPhones, does that mean things will be more competitive than ever?

Nope. You say monopoly, I say oligopoly, they’ll still take every penny they can.

We’ll post them as we find them, and if you’ve come across the plans and rates in your area, drop them in the comments and we’ll add them here.

Canada, Bell

Bell has announced similar promotions, including the $30/6GB and the iPhone/iPad sharing, though for only $10.

Canada, Rogers/Fido

Rogers/Fido has just put up a post detailing upgrade costs, along with a tool to find out what you’re eligible for. In addition, they’re once again offering a special $30/6GB data plan for a limited time, and are also adding a $20 option to share your iPhone 4 data with your iPad.

Now I’m no math wiz but I do know $20 for sharing data compared to $30 for doubling it doesn’t sound like a great deal… yet. Let’s hope Rogers improves on that asap.

Rogers/Fido push out OTA iPhone Carrier Settings Update — iOS 4 handles on-device

June 19th, 2010

ios4 carrier setting update

Interesting – Rogers and their Fido subsidiary pushed out a Carrier Settings Update for the iPhone (to version 7.1 for those keeping track). More interesting – iOS 4 to pops it up over-the-air and offers to install it on-device. (Best as we can remember, the last update popped up in, and was installed by, iTunes on the desktop).

One more step towards the tether-less future. Anyone else, anywhere else, get an update?

[Thanks for the tip, Alex!]

Rogers: No $20 iPad “sharing” plan. No Fido.

May 10th, 2010

TiPb contacted Rogers to get some clarification about that $20 “add to existing data plan” option that was listed on Apple.com today as part of the Canadian iPhone pre-order launch, and Rogers was kind enough to respond:

We’ve confirmed that we have two iPad data plans available for our customers. Both the 250 MB for $15 and 5 GB for $35 include free unlimited access to all Rogers WiFi Hot Spots.

At this time, we do not have a sharing plan to announce. The reference to a sharing plan on the Apple website was an error and is being removed.

Please visit RedBoard for more information on iPad data plans

On the RedBoard, Rogers further notes that their Fido subsidiary will not be supporting the iPad at launch.

Updated: Rogers Canada iPad 3G data plans detailed

May 10th, 2010

Rogers Canada iPad data prices

Apple’s online store in Canada is now open for iPad pre-orders and along with them are Rogers data plans for both new and existing users.

  • $15 for 250MB
  • $35 for 5GB
  • $20 to add iPad to an existing data plan

There’s also an option to pre-order your Rogers MicoSIM for $0.20 (limit 1 per customer). We’ve got to hand it to Rogers, however, while the base plans are a tiny bit more expensive and/or limited than AT&T’s US plans, the ability to add $20 to an existing Rogers data plan is fantastic and combined with the recent extension on free tethering for iPhone users makes us think Canadians are finally out of the data dark ages.

UPDATE: Rogers replied to TiPb saying the $20 was an error and is being removed.

Apple has links to Rogers for more info, though they’re currently being redirected to a request form. There’s also a link for additional carriers which doesn’t list any, not even Rogers subsidiary Fido, though its hard to imagine Bell and Telus, along with new upstarts like Wind sitting Apple out entirely.

If you’re on Rogers, let us know what you’re going for.

Rogers Canada: iPad 3G plans coming end of May

April 14th, 2010

iPad 3G Rogers Canada

Hot on the heals of Apple’s international iPad delay, Rogers in Canada also announces that they’ll be providing iPad 3G pricing plans at the end of May. And that’s pretty much verbatim:

Rogers today announced that it will offer iPad price plans for all models from the end of May in Canada.

It’s almost as if this has been coordinated to blunt the impact of the delay by giving international users some small glimmer of additional info, doesn’t it? Could it also hint that iPad 3G will be arriving alongside iPad Wi-Fi outside the US? We certainly hope so. We hope even more, however, that Rogers matches AT&T’s unlocked, no-contract, cheap data-only plans for iPad.

What’s the over/under on that?

Rogers and Fido to Keep iPhone Tethering Free (with some Caveats)

March 24th, 2010

iPhone 3.0: Tethering Hero

Rogers (and subsidiary Fido) announced today via their RedBoard blog that the initial free tethering promotion for the iPhone would become the official policy going forward — free tethering for everyone. Almost.

Effective immediately, tethering will continue to be included at no additional charge for Rogers and Fido customers who subscribe to data plans of 1 GB and above (excluding those listed below).

“Those listed below” are:

Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less than 1 GB. Also, it cannot be used with the new 1 GB+ One Rate Roaming plans (except Rocket stick plans), Family Shared Data & Voice Plans and Smartphone & Rocket stick shared data plans.

Complaints are already piling up about some of those exclusion in the blog comments, of course.

This policy also applies to BlackBerry, Android (if supported by the OS), and all other smartphones with qualifying data plans.

Since I was posting via iPhone Bluetooth tether from a local coffee shop yesterday, I for one appreciate and will make good use of it. However, our frigid Canadian hearts go out to our US friends who, 9 months later, still haven’t heard word one from AT&T about official iPhone tethering…

2007 iPhone 2G is on iPhone 3.1, 2009 Android Dream/Magic Stuck on 1.5

December 22nd, 2009

rogers-htc-android-1.jpg

So the oldest 2007 iPhone 2G can easily download and run (most of) iPhone OS 3.1 while the current 2009 crop of HTC Dream and Magic devices on Rogers will officially be stuck on Android 1.5? According to sibling site AndroidCentral.com:

“HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience.”

Google explains this is a consequence of being not evil “open”, again via AndroidCentral.com:

When we open source our code we use standard, open Apache 2.0 licensing, which means we don’t control the code. Others can take our open source code, modify it, close it up and ship it as their own. Android is a classic example of this, as several OEMs have already taken the code and done great things with it. There are risks to this approach, however, as the software can fragment into different branches which don’t work well together (remember how Unix for workstations devolved into various flavors — Apollo, Sun, HP, etc.). This is something we are working hard to avoid with Android.

Working well together isn’t the problem. Rogers, HTC, and Google ignoring an entire country full of early adopters — the very users that help drive a platform — is the problem. How many Dream and Magic owners, likely geeks who form the loving core of Google and Android’s user base, will be happy to here they’re “stable* with 1.5 and don’t need and won’t be getting 1.6 (and who knows about 2.x?) while seeing the Motorola Droid and upcoming Hero updates, never mind Nexus One, splashed all over their interwebs.

There are pros and cons to both the integrated hardware/software/benevolent dictatorship model of Apple and the licensed hardware/software/wild west model of Google, to be sure. Buyers should beware of Apple control over the App Store and ecosystem, but they should also beware of hardware fracture from the hands-off overlords.

Sure, one day Apple will kill backwards compatibility as well, iPhone 2G first, then subsequent devices over time. If you’d bought an iPhone 3G earlier this year, however, how happy would you be if Apple and Rogers announced 2.0 was “stable” and that you don’t need and won’t be getting iPhone 2.x? 3.0? Would you be enjoying all the iPhone 3GS cut and paste and video commercials then? How happy would you were told your brand new iPhone 3GS wouldn’t be getting 4.0 next year?

Rogers iPhone Reception Problems Due to “Dummy” Bell and Telus HSPA Towers?

December 14th, 2009

antenna_pointingtoward_pokhara

Are recent iPhone reception problems on Rogers Canada the result of Bell and Telus putting up “dummy” HSPA towers? That’s what a Rogers rep told one customer who complained about calls cutting in and out for the last couple of weeks.

I apologize for the inconvenience that is happening with you’re iphone. It is probable due to the new hspa dummy towers being put up by other carriers that it is interfering with you’re signal. So I would advise to manually select the rogers network instead of the phone doing an automatic selection which it does by default. To manually connect on an iphone do the following. On the phone go to ’settings’ then go to ‘carriers’ uncheck automatic and only select rogers from that list.

I’ve been having similar problems, only while in the western part of downtown Montreal, and also only for the last two weeks, and I know of almost a half-dozen others with the same problem in the same area.

Are dummy HSPA towers a likely explanation? We’ll give Rogers’ proposed solution a try and get back to you. If you’ve been having the same problem, let us know if it works, or if you have other ideas.

O2 UK to Start Unlocking iPhones Nov. 10. Rogers Canada — Not.

November 10th, 2009

O2 UK iPhone Unlock

Making good on their promise from a few days ago, O2 UK has launched a website where customers can get their iPhone’s officially unlocked starting November 10, 2009. Here are the details:

  • Pay Monthly customers can get the unlock any time, but you have to keep paying O2 for the length of your remaining service contract.
  • Pay Go customers can get the unlock after 12 months, for a one-time £15 fee (deducted from airtime balance).

To begin the process, customers need to complete the online form (via the link above). The process will take up to 14 days, but customers will get an SMS confirmation when it’s completed, and they can then place a non-O2 SIM in their iPhones, hook up to iTunes, and finish the unlock.

Curious as to whether the other major new iPhone multi-carrier market would be following suit, TiPb contacted Rogers and received the following reply:

Rogers policies haven’t changed in this regard.

One step forward, one step back. Hopefully Rogers will reconsider and take a page from O2’s consumer-friendly approach.

Meanwhile, if you go for the new O2 unlock, let us know how the process works out for you!

Bell and Telus to Launch the iPhone in Canada Next Month?

October 6th, 2009

telus_iphone_3gs

TiPb, among others, has been hearing rumors for months now that Bell and Telus’ new GSM-based HSPA+ network would be up and running by November, and that the iPhone would follow along immediately there after. Nice to see some confirmation via Canadian stalwart, the Globe and Mail, however:

Bell announced Monday that it will launch national service in November on the $1-billion next-generation wireless network it has been building with Telus, months ahead of schedule. The project extends the two companies’ existing third-generation (3G) networks to include the same technology standard employed by Rogers, the nation’s largest cellphone company.

No comments from any of the carriers or Apple, of course, and it remains to be seen what if any downward pressure competition in Canada — like in the UK — would put on iPhone pricing for consumers.

Our question: Bell and Telus will have HSPA+ but no EDGE (to our knowledge), so if an iPhone on Bell or Telus couldn’t get a 3G signal, what exactly would it fall back on? EVDO/CDMA is not an option…
