So did you pre-order or reserve an iPhone 4 today? Are you going to?

June 15th, 2010

So did you pre-order or reserve an iPhone 4 today? Are you going to? Sure, it looks like AT&T can’t handle the onslaught of would-be iPhone 4 pre-order and reservations that came crashing down on them, and their servers, this morning. And the Apple Online Store has gone up and down so much it may need a gyro soon. But we have to hope at least some of you have gotten your order confirmations and are the proud soon-to-be owners of a new iPhone 4? (Black, of course, since White ain’t coming until later this summer).

Let us know how you’re doing in the poll above, and feel free to expand (and vent!) in the comments below!

[NOTE: This post is sticky, it's going to stay at the top for a while so be sure to scroll down the front page for more news and posts throughout the day!]

So what are the UK, France, German, and Japanese iPhone 4 carrier plans going to be?

June 14th, 2010

iPhone 4 France

Even before Apple announced the iPhone 4 was coming to the US, UK, France, Germany, and Japan on June 24, AT&T announced new, tiered and capped data plans and aggressive upgrade options for the new handset. Internationally…? Cricket chirps.

So here’s where the power of the TiPb nation comes in. We’ve put as much as we could find below, but if you know more about carrier plans and upgrade options in the UK, France, Germany, or Japan, drop it in the comments and we’ll update the post.

Monthly plans begin at 100 minutes and 500 MB of data priced at £25 for a 24-month contract and £30 for an 18-month contract and ramp up to unlimited calling and 1 GB of data priced at £60/£65. A footnote to O2’s pricing matrix indicates, however, that the carrier will continue running a “promotion” offering unlimited data for all smartphones until October, at which time the company will offer additional data in 500 MB (£5) and 1 GB (£10) buckets.

For £20 a month you can buy off your existing contract to become eligible for upgrade faster. [MacRumors]

Apple refunds expedited shipping charge for iPad pre-orders

April 1st, 2010

Screen shot 2010-03-31 at 5-1.21.46 PM

If you pre-ordered your iPad for April 3 and ponied up the extra money for expedited shipping, 9to5Mac reports that Apple is giving you a refund. Since all iPad Wi-Fi deliveries will occur on the same day, the more expensive shipping option made no sense. Nice to see Apple making right one that, isn’t it?

Apple holding iPad pre-orders, reassuring iPad reservations

March 31st, 2010

Screen shot 2010-03-31 at 9.16.18 AM

Apple has shipped iPad pre-orders and regardless of whether you chose expedited or regular old delivery, it should get to your door on Saturday, April 3 (if your area offers weekend deliveries). To make sure it doesn’t get there any earlier, Apple is using every trick in their playbook so don’t be nervous if you see “holds” or “exceptions” on your delivery status. They don’t want any “accidental” pre-releases hitting the streets (and webs).

And if you reserved at your local (or not so local if you’re flying or driving in from abroad), Apple is sending out email confirmations (see above) complete with word that Apple Specialists will help you get set up (or for business customers, Apple Business is offering consultations by appointment at some stores).

Only a few sleeps left before iPad Wi-Fi launch day in the US (and perhaps a few weeks internationally and for 3G). Everyone ready? Anyone who hadn’t wanted one before reconsidering things now (especially after those Guided Tour videos hit)?

New iPad Pre-Orders Will Ship By April 12th

March 28th, 2010

April12_iPad

If you hesitated until today to pre-order your iPad you’re going to have to wait a few extra days before your device is in your hands as Apple has changed the shipped by date to April 12th. If you pre-ordered prior to today then you can relax, you have nothing to worry about and your iPad should be in your hands on April 3rd.

Still debating where you should make your purchase? Think again about going into your local Best Buy as TUAW is reporting that they will have will have extremely limited stock – 15 per store to be exact and that’s 15 total of all 3 variants. Best Buy will then receive an additional 15 devices on April 11th.

Apple’s latest creation is looking to be quite a hot commodity. Who would have thought!?

Apple Begins [Pre-Charging] iPad Orders for April 3?

March 26th, 2010

iPad pre-orders

Reader Paul tells Apple charged his credit card today for his iPad order, placed on the very first day of availability. We asked on Twitter and it looks like he wasn’t alone.

Typically companies only begin processing order charges when they start shipping products. Does this mean the first set of iPad have commenced their journey from manufacturing for an April 3 delivery?

[UPDATE: No, turns out it just means Apple is doing a check and hold to make sure funds are available for them to charge when the device ships for April 3]

Did your card get processed? Wi-fi only or 3G as well?

150,000 iPads Pre-Ordered, Which Ones are TiPb Getting?

March 16th, 2010

which_ipad_tipb

With estimates of Apple’s first weekend of iPad pre-orders already topping 150,000 units, we thought we’d take a quick look at just which models TiPb readers — and staff — were getting. We posted our survey on Friday, just as pre-orders started and the results can be seen above. A lot of you are either not getting one or are waiting before taking the plunge. For those of you who did pre-order, the cheapest 16GB iPad Wi-Fi was most popular, followed by the most expensive 64GB iPad 3G, and then the 32GB Wi-Fi model.

As to TiPb (and SPE!) staff, here’s what we’re getting and why:

  • Rene Ritchie: I went with the 16GB Wi-Fi version because I want it now and will be getting a 3G version as well so I’m keeping costs down up-front so I can splurge at the end. Also, I have to drive from Montreal to Albany to pick it up, so, yeah.

  • Dieter Bohn: The iPad is an exercise in contradictions: looks like it could be a full, multitasking computer, but acts like a giant iPhone. Could be a giant iPhone, but the big screen makes it something more. So I figured I’d embrace the contradiction and get the craziest one in the lineup: 64 gigs, WiFi only. The fact that I have several phones which act as WiFi hotspots helps, though.

  • Chad Garrett: It was a tough call, but I need an iPad like NOW. So, I went with the 16GB Wi-Fi only model. I already have a 32GB iPhone 3GS so I can’t see the justification of another $130 for 3G on the iPad. The base model will meet my needs just fine and fill the empty hole in my life.

  • Jeremy Sikora: I ordered a 32GB iPad Wi-Fi. I blame Rene.

  • Chris Vitek: I am going for the 3G because I want the option of having Internet/data connections even without wifi. The large disk size is so I can load lots of photos and media (mostly movies) and apps without worrying about running out of space. I would have preferred a larger storage size, but 64GB isn’t too bad.

  • Matt Sawyers: I am going with the 3G iPad. While I expect to mostly use the iPad in WiFi areas, to know that I can get 3G away from a Wifi point if I need it. Also the fact that I will not have to pay for the service every month if I do not need it is an extra incentive! The 64GB size will be used for a large number of documents I like to have on the go & I will have a lot of my podcasts & videos on it as well.

  • Mickey Papillon, The Cell Phone Junkie: I went with the 16gb iPad because I wanted to get and use the iPad to keep up with the technology, but won’t be keeping all my media on it. I determined from my 32gb iPhone that I don’t use all the space on it, and in fact, most of the space on the iPhone is being used by music. I will not be putting any music on the iPad, as I have other devices that I use for music (like the iPhone and ipod).

  • Matt Miller, Nokia Experts: After much internal debate, I bought a 32GB WiFi-only version because I think it will be a great tool for my daily train commute. It may end up replacing my nook with the multiple ebook client support and it will keep me from buying this year’s new iPhone, no matter how cool it might be. I can get a great iPhone app experience on the iPad without having to sign up for an AT&T contract. I never use my iPhone 3GS as a phone so the iPad should also replace my iPhone, but my daughter will be happy to take it from me.

If you pre-ordered the iPad, tell us which one you ordered and why!

91,000 iPads Pre-Ordered in 6 Hours?

March 13th, 2010

preorder_thumb

iPad pre-orders went live at 5:30am PT, 8:30am ET and in the 6 hours that follow, Fortune relays that Apple has moved 91,000 of the magical and revolutionary new devices. (50,000 in the first 2 hours!)

The estimates are based on a bunch of impatient investors on the AAPL Sanity Board inputing and tracking order numbers via Google Spreadsheets. Even if they’re not spot on accurate, they show a good amount of movement for a device many dismissed right out of the gate.

TUAW meanwhile is hearing in-store reservations for iPad Wi-Fi is 41,000.

What do you think, are those good numbers for Steve Job’s most important product launch? Were you expecting more, less?

So that’s 5:30am PT, 8:30am ET, 1:30pm GT. Of course, the Apple Online Store might go down first, and who knows what delays might spring up between now and then, but for what it’s worth that’s currently go time.

UPDATED: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Ships Friday, Aug. 28!

Snow Leopard Box

UPDATE: Official press release from Apple: Apple to Ship Mac OS X Snow Leopard on August 28

The Apple Store is back up, and as expected it’s brought the next generation of Mac OS X, 10.6 Snow Leopard, with it! Pre-ordering is now available for delivery by this Friday, August 28 in the US (international stores may only ship by 8/28).

At $29 for single user and $49 for a 5-user family pack, for Mac users, this is likely a no-brainer. We’re not sure what, if any, goodies will be in there specific to the iPhone of iPod touch, but with OpenCL (use GPU as CPU), Grand Central Dispatch (packetize processor tasks like network traffic), built-in Exchange ActiveSync support, QuickTime X, and a whole heap of refinements under the hood (hello, Cocoa Finder!), it’ll be worth it anyway. Find out more at Apple.com.

For everyone else, worry not, Windows 7 is still on track for October 22, Ubuntu Karmic Koala is set for October 29, and if you rock a different distro… well, you’ll likely have an update at some point too!
