iPod touch G4 parts with front facing camera

No sooner does speculation start about the iPod touch G4 than parts are spotted sporting a suspiciously front-facing camera-like hole.

Been wanting in on the FaceTime action but haven’t pulled the trigger on an iPhone 4? September/October may bring you your second iOS option.

Yes, there will be a new iPod touch this year…

July 8th, 2010

Given that Apple has released a new iPod touch every fall, every year, since the iPhone launched in 2007 it’s not hard to speculate that yes, indeed, they just might announced the 4th generation iPod touch this year at their annual iTunes/iPod Special Music Event.

Likewise, iPod touch G4 will get it’s traditional iPhone-matching hardware update. This year that could include a Retina Display, Apple A4 chipset, 802.11n Wi-Fi, gyroscope, and maybe even that long awaited camera — including a front-facing one to help make up those 10 million FaceTime devices Steve Jobs said Apple would ship this year.

Previous years the iPod touch update has even exceeded iPhone in some ways, with slightly faster clock speed on the chip and double the NAND Flash storage (since there’s extra space thanks to the missing GSM/UMTS radios). iPod touch is already at 64GB. Depending on pricing and availability of the newer, double density chips, we could even see 128GB. (So long, iPod classic?)

With iPhone 4 being as thin as it is, and iPod touch typically being thinner still, the design is something I’m looking forward to this year as well.

And it will probably come with iOS 4.1.

As attention inevitably turns to “what’s next”, we’ll get the usually bunch of retailer and analyst predictions, component and accessory leaks, and maybe an early peek at the device itself. We’ll cover the most interesting, most substantial items as they come up but always remember — it ain’t real until Steve Jobs holds it up on stage.

Until then, let us know what you want in the 2010 iPod touch G4.

YouTube significantly updates mobile site for iPhone

July 8th, 2010

New YouTube Mobile site

Google’s YouTube has deployed a significant update to their mobile site, m.youtube.com. As is typical with Google’s web apps, it works well and looks even better. Here’s their hit list:

It’s really fast. The user interface incorporates larger, more touch-friendly elements, making it easier to access videos on the go. It incorporates the features and functionality you’ve come to expect from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like” or “unlike” videos directly from your device. As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which are not updated as frequently.

Sure, iPhone has a built-in YouTube app but it gets its updates only a few times a year when iOS gets updated. Theoretically, m.youtube.com will get updates any time YouTube feels like it, hopefully as fast as the main YouTube site. And hey, who doesn’t like options?

New MobileMe calendar web app goes into beta

July 7th, 2010

Preview the New MobileMe Calendar Beta

Apple is launching a new version of the online MobileMe calendar web app, and much like they did with the new version of online mail, the design influence of the iPad app is unmistakable. Want in on the beta? Here’s what you have to do:

To sign up, go to me.com/calendar and click “Request an invitation.” You will receive an email notification when you have been added to the beta (we will add members in the order of their request over the coming weeks).

New features include:

  • The aforementioned new, iPad-like UI.
  • Shared calendars (for family and friends).
  • Published calendars (for groups and teams).
  • Event invitations with RSVPs (yes!).
  • Based on CalDAV standard.

It’s good to go on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Mac, with Outlook support for the PC coming soon.

So, how does it sound? Enough of an upgrade? Anything major still missing? Anyone get in on the beta yet?

Full feature descriptions after the break.

[MobileMe News]

Beautiful new web application
The Calendar beta includes a new web application at me.com with great-looking calendar views. You’ll find redesigned day, week, and month views, as well as a new list view to make scanning your events easier. Your calendars will also load faster, thanks to improved performance. The new web application works best with Safari 5, Firefox 3.6, and Internet Explorer 8.

Share calendars with family and friends
You can easily share your calendars with one or more MobileMe members to keep everyone on the same page. For example, create a shared calendar called “Kids” for school and weekend activities. You can allow the person you’re sharing a calendar with to edit events, and set up email notifications to tell you when they make a change.

Publish a calendar for a group or team
The Calendar beta lets you share a read-only public calendar that can be viewed by anyone, perfect for publishing an events calendar such as a soccer team schedule. After setting it up you can send the team members a link to view the calendar on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.

Event invitations with RSVPs
Inviting any guest to an event is easy from the MobileMe Calendar beta. Just add their email address to the event (they don’t have to be a MobileMe member) and your guests will get an invitation email they can respond to directly by clicking a link. Your event then automatically updates, making it easy to track RSVPs right in your calendar.

Works on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac
The MobileMe Calendar beta uses the CalDAV standard so you can view and edit your calendars using the built-in calendar applications on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. Please note that support for PCs with Microsoft Outlook is coming soon.

iTunes account hacks Vietnamese book apps

Apple has responded to that bizarre incident over the weekend involving a glut of Vietnamese, copyright-infringing book apps rocking to best-seller status on the backs of hacked iTunes accounts.

The developer Thuat Nguyen and his apps were removed from the App Store for violating the developer Program License Agreement, including fraudulent purchase patterns.

Developers do not receive any iTunes confidential customer data when an app is downloaded.

If your credit card or iTunes password is stolen and used on iTunes we recommend that you contact your financial institution and inquire about canceling the card and issuing a chargeback for any unauthorized transactions. We also recommend that you change your iTunes account password immediately. For more information on best practices for password security visit http://www.apple.com/support/itunes.

Good advice for this incident, great advice in general. Also remember to never, not ever, click a link in an email and log into an account. That’s how social engineering attacks like Phishing scams work. Use a strong password (long, with numbers and symbols), keep it unique, and change it once and a while. Treat it as securely as you treat your credit card and cash — because that’s what it is.

UPDATE: According to Clayton Morris who followed up with Apple, about 400 users were impacted. iTunes’s servers were not hacked. In response Apple will be increasing the frequency they require you to enter your credit card verification number going forward.

iOS 4 feature: Linked contacts

July 6th, 2010

ios_4_contacts_unified_info

When you sync contacts from more than one source (i.e. Exchange and MobileMe, on-device and Google Sync, etc.), and there are duplicates, rather than showing the same contact twice iOS 4 will instead create a single, linked contact. This works on any iOS 4 device, including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, recent iPod touch, etc.

When you look at a linked contact, the header will show Unified Info at the top so you know it’s linked. At the very bottom of the contact it will show you the source of the links (i.e MobileMe, Google). Tapping on the source lets you see the original, non-unfied info from just that source.

If you don’t like the idea of your contacts being linked, you can tap edit and hit Unlink. If iOS 4 missed linking a contact that ought be linked, tap edit, scroll down to the bottom, tap Link Contact and choose the contact you want linked.

[Thanks T.J!]

+ equals universal iPhone/iPad app in App Store

July 5th, 2010

+ sign means universal app for iPhone and iPad in App Store

If you see a + sign next to or below an app in the iTunes App Store, it indicates that app is universal — designed to work natively on both the iPhone and iPad.

Typically these universal apps are provided by developers when the functionality is similar on both iPad and iPhone, but due to the iPad’s large screen a different interface is needed (to include sidebars, popovers, and wide views instead of deep levels).

It also means you only have to download — and pay for — the app once.

Sure, you can run any iPhone app on the iPad if you’re okay with boxing or chunky double fuzzy 2x mode, but universal apps ensure you get the best user interface — and user experience — possible on all your current iOS devices.

So if you have an iPhone or iPod touch and an iPad, and you see the + sign for a universal app, you’re good to go.

UPDATED: iTunes accounts being hacked, used to cheat App Store?

July 4th, 2010

iTunes account hacks Vietnamese book apps

It looks like there’s been a sharp rise in iTunes accounts being hacked. We don’t have any solid information on this yet, but when it comes to security TiPb believes in warning first, worrying about the details later. Engadget points to a link between the hacks and the rise in popularity of some Vietnamese book apps. Sounds crazy, but it’s absolutely not funny:

As of this writing, 42 of the top 50 books by revenue are from the seller Thuat Nguyen, whose company website (“mycompany”) leads to parked site www.home.com. [...] a number of people [are] reporting up to hundreds of dollars being spent unwillingly from their account to these specific books. Coincidence? Let’s not mince words here, something is definitely amiss, and it’s not looking good. Just to be safe, might wanna check your purchase history under Apple Account information. We’ve reached out to Apple and will let you know as soon as we hear back.

Checking your account info for fraudulent charges is great advice. Using a long, strong password with numbers, symbols, and letters, and changing it regularly is also good advice.

If you’ve seen anything suspicious, report the problem to iTunes, and let us know in the comments.

UPDATE: 9to5Mac says the “mycompany” apps have been pulled from the iTunes App Store.

How-to troubleshoot iOS 4 battery life problems

June 30th, 2010

Push Notification 20% Hit on Battery Life?

Simple question – how’s your battery life under iOS 4? We keep wanting better hardware and more features — and better battery life at the same time. How did iOS 4 deliver for you?

If the answer is not too well, we’ve got some steps you can use to try and help. We did this last year for iPhone 3.0, and it’s worth doing again.

Now, if your battery drain is caused simply by use — you’re running background music or navigation like a fiend, for example, your only choice is to get a few more charging cables or battery extenders. If, however, you’re doing roughly the same things you’ve always done and getting substantially less battery life for your troubles, there’s a chance a few troubleshooting steps might just help get your power problems back under control.

Reboot iPhone

If, all of a sudden, your iPhone starts burning through battery and getting hot at the same time, there could be a “rogue process” just churning away in the background. The answer to that is a good old-fashioned power cycle.

Hold down the sleep button until the red “Slide to power off” arrow appears. If your iPhone is frozen or otherwise in dire straights, you can hold down the home button at the same time as the sleep button to force quit all applications and bring up the red arrow. Then just swipe, let the iPhone turn off, wait a few seconds, and hold down the sleep button again to turn your iPhone back on.

Redo Push

Since iPhone 2.0 we’ve seen Push gone wrong really cause a hit to battery life. With 3.0, Push Notification means not only could mail, calendar, and contacts start misbehaving in the background, but your IM, Twitter, games, and all sorts of other apps can as well. In iOS 4 we can even have multiple ActiveSync accounts so push can hit twice as hard.

Apple says Push can cause a 20% drop in battery life, but if you think yours is worse then it should be, the next step is to redo anything that involves Push, including MobileMe, Exchange, and Google Sync accounts, and apps using Push Notification. Now, you might want to try doing one at a time, check your battery life, and if you don’t notice any improvement, try the next one. If you find the culprit quickly, that approach could save you some time. If you just want to get it over with, you might want to do them all at once.

For the accounts, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, choose your MobileMe and/or Exchange accounts, scroll down to the bottom and hit delete. For apps, go to Settings > Notifications and look at the list of any apps using Push Notification. Go back to the Home Screen, hold down the home button until the icons start to jiggle, and delete the Push Notification app.

Then, for accounts, go back to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, hit Add Account…, choose Mobile Me and/or Exchange, and re-enter your settings. For Push Notification apps, either sync them back from iTunes or go to the App Store app and re-download them.

My 3GS was getting warm and draining fast after I added Google Sync. Once I deleted and added it again, everything was great. So don’t skip this step.

Restore as New iPhone

We won’t lie to you — this is the nuclear option. It’s scorched earth. But to be frank, we at TiPb almost always default to this step because it almost always “just works”. We do this every time we get a new firmware and every time we notice something just isn’t right, and we have excellent battery life to prove it.

To restore your iPhone as new and get a fresh, clean start, attach it to your Windows or Mac machine via the USB cable and launch iTunes. A Restore button should be front and center on the screen. Hit it, then wait as iTunes goes through the laborious process of wiping your iPhone and installing the firmware again from scratch.

IMPORTANT: When iTunes asks if you want to restore your data from backup or set up as a new iPhone, choose NEW iPHONE.

Yes, you will lose your settings and any data saved in apps that don’t provide some sort of sync functionality, but it’s possible (even likely) some corruption in those settings or data is contributing to your poor battery life, and with an appliance like the iPhone, this is the only way to get rid of it.

This will also kill your Jailbreak, if you’re jailbroken. But if something in your Jailbreak was killing your battery life, like backgrounder gone awry, trying out your iPhone without the Jailbreak is a good way to establish that.

Once your iPhone is set up as new, you can sync your info and media back over using the iTunes tabs as normal, and/or setup accounts and download apps on the iPhone itself.

Conclusion

iOS 4 should give you around the same battery life as previous versions. Even multitasking on iPhone 3GS shouldn’t be a huge hit given Apple’s implementation. If you’re getting substantially less, there could be a problem with your setup or install.

Rebooting the iPhone, redoing Push-enabled applications, and restoring your iPhone as new are three escalating steps you can try to fix your battery problems.

Let us know how they work for you.

Apple posts article on how to fix iOS 4 Exchange sync problems

June 30th, 2010

iphone 4 multiple exchange accounts

Apple has posted a knowledge base article support note for users whose Exchange ActiveSync mail, contacts, and calendars are no longer syncing post-iOS 4 update.

Here are the symptoms as described by Apple:

Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.

And the solution:

To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.

To install the profile:

  1. Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.
  2. Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.
  3. A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now. Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.
  4. Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.

After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

If you’ve been having Exchange sync issues under iOS 4, let us know if this does indeed resolve it for you.

Instapaper 2.2.5 now available for iPhone and iPad

June 30th, 2010

instapaper_225_iphone

Macro Arment’s excellent Instapaper 2.2.5 has just become available for iPhone and iPad. I had the good fortune of talking briefly with Arment at WWDC and the amount of consideration he puts into usability and interface borders on the inspiring. His fearlessness in changing or even killing features to ultimately make a better product — guess what? — ultimately makes a better product.

New this time around are a rename from Instapaper Pro to just Instapaper, as well as additions to pagination, iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS backgroud task completion under iOS 4, support for iPhone 4 Retina Display, an overhaul to rotation and position saving, and one more thing

… Instapaper now syncs position in partially read articles between devices.

Check out the full description and go get the app via the links below.

How to jailbreak iOS 4

June 30th, 2010

The dev team recently released a new PwnageTool that will allow you to jailbreak iOS4 on your iPhone or iPod touch. Since we covered that, the dev team has upgraded the PwnageTool to 4.0.1.  This is our walkthrough of  how to jailbreak devices running iOS4. As always here’s our disclaimer;

If you are in any way, shape, or form hesitant to jailbreak your device, don’t!  We take no responsibility for whatever damage you may do to your device during or after the process.  Jailbreaking should typically be reserved for semi-advanced to advanced users.  Preliminary jailbreaks can sometimes cause more problems.  This jailbreak is NOT as simple as a button click like blackra1n or Spirit.  If that’s what you’d prefer, wait for that… pass on this one.”

If you’re alright with all of that, hit the jump to see if your device can currently be jailbroken/unlocked and how to do it.

Sorry I don’t have a video for you guys this time, I had my 3GS swapped due to it bricking hardcore, and I have the newer baseband, but for now, here’s a nice walkthrough. I’ll update with a video when the dev team has a solution for newer basebands on 4.0.

iPhone Family (Mac Only)

iPhone 4
  • Not currently supported, so please don’t attempt as you may damage your phone. As with all new hardware, you’ll have to wait a bit for an update that supports iPhone 4.
iPhone 3GS
  • New bootrom: No
  • Old bootrom and haven’t ever jailbroken with Spirit but HAVE been jailbroken before: yes, you can jailbreak
  • An easy way to tell if you have an older or newer bootrom is to check your serial, if the 4th and 5th digits are 40 or less, you’ve got an older bootrom. (ie – if my serial was 8B4387323 I’d be okay as my phone’s 4th and 5th digits are 38)
iPhone 3G
  • Easiest way, just use redsn0w regardless of your situation, it should work, or follow the directions below

iPod Family (Mac and Windows)

iPod Touch G2
  • The second generation iPod touch is currently the ONLY iPod touch that is compatible with PwnageTool 4.0.1 at this time.  If you have a first or third generation, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Either follow the directions below for second generation iPods or use redsn0w if you have a non-MC model of the 2nd gen iPod touch, basically older bootrom)

Instructions

Alright, now that we’ve determined whether or not you’re capable of jailbreaking, I’m assuming you’d only be reading this if you’re “certain” you can.  Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Back up your iPhone/iPod in iTunes
  2. Download PwnageTool here from the official source or one of the many mirrors
  3. Make sure your device is connected and open PwnageTool
  4. PwnageTool will ask you to select your device (I always select expert mode by the way, it will give you more choices when building your custom firmware – for iPhone 3G users who would like to activate the multi-tasking functionality, etc, you’ll need to select expert mode and further down in the process, you’ll be able to select an option that will enable features like multitasking, it may lag though, so consider yourself warned.)
  5. Then select Next and PwnageTool will browse for firmwares on your computer. If for some reason your computer does not find them, you can get firmwares from here. (Remember to make SURE you are downloading the correct firmware for your device.  iPhone 1st gen = 1,1 – iPhone 3G = 1,2 – iPhone 3GS = 2,1 – iPhone 4 = 3,1
  6. After PwnageTool finds your correct firmware or you have browsed to the firmware you have downloaded, click next.
  7. (Simple Mode, skip to step 11) If you selected expert most, you will now get a screen asking you to customize your build, select general at the very least, and typically Cydia packages, if you’d like the pineapple logo instead of the Apple logo, select Custom Logos then click next.
  8. Next you will get a screen asking you to partition your space for jailbreak stuff (you don’t have to). It’ll also ask you if you’d like to activate, uncheck this if you’re on AT&T and not unlocking.
  9. The next screen will allow you to select custom packages you’d like pre-installed. Select what you want and click next again.
  10. Select your custom boot logos or browse for your own and click Next.
  11. Select Build on this screen, it’ll prompt you for a location to save your custom IPSW, I normally save this to my desktop. (Oh, don’t stray too far away from your computer, you’ll probably be asked for an admin password at some point during the build process).
  12. Once your bundle is done you’ll need to open iTunes and put your phone into DFU mode. Simply turn your phone completely off, open iTunes, and hold down your home button until iTunes recognizes there is an iPhone/iPod in recovery mode.
  13. Next hold down alt+option on your keyboard and click restore, navigate to your custom firmware you just built and restore from that. If all went well, your iPhone/iPod should reboot jailbroken!

Unlocking iPhone 3G and 3GS

As ultrasn0w now supports ALL versions of iPhone basebands, if your jailbreak was successful, you just need to install ultrasn0w via Cydia and you’ll be unlocked!

If you have any questions or concerns with this process, feel free to leave them in the comments, forums, contact me on Twitter @iMuggle, or shoot me a quick e-mail at ally.kazmucha@tipb.com! Happy jailbreaking!

How are you organizing your iOS 4 Folders?

June 23rd, 2010

One of the big new features of iOS 4 is the ability to organize your apps into folders. Each folder can contain no more than 12 apps and can be placed anywhere you like, including the dock. Folders are completely customizable and the process is simple.

Already a folders-making machine? We want to see them! Head on over to our iPhone Forum and add your screen shot to the showcase. Make sure you tell us how you’re organizing them. By category, by workflow? Do you have Folders in your dock? Are you using them to help get things done or just better keep track of your fun? Show us!

Not sure how to set up Folders yet? Read on after the break!

There are two different ways to create and organize your folders. The first is with your iPhone. Tap and hold on an app until it starts to jiggle. Next, drag the the app on top of another app you want to group it with it. The icon of the bottom app will slightly enlarge with a dark boarder and both icons will become translucent. At this point, you can continue holding or release; both actions will open your new folder containing both apps and named something the OS finds appropriate, but you can name your folder whatever you want. To add more apps to your folder, tap outside the folder and drag apps onto the folder icon. Releasing your hold on the app within seconds of placing it on the folder drops the app into the folder but doesn’t open it. If you hold the app over the folder for a few seconds, the folder will open so you can place the app at a specific location in the folder. Once you’re done adding apps and organizing your folder, press the home button. To remove an app from a folder, just drag it somewhere outside of the folder while in jiggly-mode.

The other method is in the Apps tab with iTunes. The only significant difference is that you’re using a mouse instead of your finger, so you must double-click to open a folder. Everything else is the same. Just sync your iPhone when you’re done!

Okay, now head on over to the iPhone Forum and show your freshly made Folders off. (You can screen shot them by holding down the sleep button on top of your iPhone or iPod touch while you click the home button below the screen.)

Get to it!

Jailbreak How-To: Back Up Apps in Rock and Cydia

June 22nd, 2010

In lieu of iOS4 and iPhone 4 next week, we know a lot of you will be upgrading to either a new OS or new hardware altogether.  Those of you that jailbreak may find backing up your jailbroken apps a lot easier than reinstalling everything once you re-jailbreak.  Now keep in mind, I wouldn’t suggest upgrading if you’re unlocked as unlocks are never a sure thing until they’re released.  But if you’re just jailbreaking, we’re already aware of a working jailbreak that’s ready for iOS4.  Given nothing changes, this should ease your transition.

Before we proceed, one more warning; as with any OS upgrade on iDevices, not all apps will be compatible immediately.  We saw this with 3.0 with things such as custom keyboards not working.  This may very well be the case again, so if you have jailbreak apps you just can’t live without, make SURE they’ll be compatible with iOS4 before you upgrade. Now hit the jump for Cydia and Rock back-up walkthroughs!

Cydia

Now Cydia is a little bit more complicated than Rock, but a lot of users much prefer Cydia, so we’ll cover this one first. It’s still a pretty easy process. To backup your jailbroken apps via Cydia, you’ll need to download a free app called Aptbackup.

Once you’ve got Aptbackup installed, you’ll see this icon on your homescreen:

Tap that icon and you’ll see 2 buttons, backup and restore. Before you upgrade or do anything, click backup.

After you do this, you’ll need to sync with iTunes. This will allow Aptbackup to sync your jailbroken apps to your PC/Mac. After you’ve done this you are okay to go ahead and install iOS4. After your install is finished, go ahead and sync/backup with iTunes.

Once you’ve restored from your backup in iTunes, go ahead and re-jailbreak. Then go into Cydia and re-download Aptbackup. This time you’ll click the restore button. This will restore all your jailbreak apps. Easy enough, right? Now lets cover Rock users…

Rock

Rock’s process is dead simple. Every Rock user should already have a Rock ID, if you don’t, you’ll need to get one in order to save backups to it, so that after a new OS install or restore, you can just sign into your ID and have your backups waiting.  After you’ve saved everything to your Rock ID, you can do your restore.  After you re-jailbreak and install Rock, you’ll just sign in and click on your settings tab like below:

You’re going to want to click Settings and scroll down a ways. You’ll see app backup options.  Now before you start installing a new OS, you need to make sure Rock is actually making backups for you. The option to save packages to your Rock ID should always be checked. If it isn’t, check it and make SURE you have a backup if you’re using Rock.

All you’re going to do here is choose “Restore from Backup” – you’ll then be presented with however many backups you have saved to your Rock ID. I normally choose the most recent under most circumstances.

That’s pretty much it! Rock will do the rest for you. It may take a bit depending on how many packages you have installed, so if need be, turn your auto-lock to never and plug your phone in, leave Rock open, and let it do its thing!

Now you’re all ready for a new jailbreak on iOS4! Questions, comments? Leave ‘em below!

Steve Jobs: Why iPhone 3G didn’t get iOS 4 wallpaper

June 22nd, 2010

iOS 4 default homescreen

When it was subtly footnoted that iPhone 3G and iPod touch G2 wouldn’t be getting iOS 4-style wallpaper, our only guess as to why was CoreAnimation performance — Apple couldn’t do their transitions over the textured background at levels that met their auteur standards.

Erica emailed Steve Jobs to find out:

Hey Steve! I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and was really looking forward to setting a background on my home screen. Guess that’s not happening, but I’d like to know why.

And Steve Jobs replied:

The icon animation with backgrounds didn’t perform well enough.

Jailbreak users have been theming since before there was an iPhone 3G, of course, just like they were recording video and multitasking, but Apple won’t put their brand on anything they consider sub-par in the performance area.

So there you have it.

So did you upgrade to iOS 4?

June 22nd, 2010

Did you upgrade your iPhone and/or iPod touch to iOS 4? After iPhone 4 pre-order day, we didn’t think things here at TiPb could get any crazier — then Apple gave us iOS 4 release day. Boom.

iOS 4 was a free update for all, so we’re guessing most of the TiPb nation grabbed it immediately. Even Jailbreakers might have finally been coaxed back to stock with the addition of multitasking… or not? (You tell us). iPhone 3G/iPod touch G2 owners had to balance performance concerns with less features. And iPhone 2G/iPod touch G1 owners — frozen out (sorry!).

Where do you fit it? Gone and done it, holding, or not gonna do it? Hit the poll up top and then give us your story in the comments below.

iOS 4 features: Safari URL bar gets “awesome”

June 22nd, 2010

iOS 4 safari awesome bar

When you tap into the Safari’s URL bar in iOS 4 and start typing, Safari starts to do a “keyword search”, i.e. display predictive results based on your bookmarks and history. Anything that contains the text you’re inputing either in the URL or history is listed below the URL field so the moment you see what you want you can just tap it and go.

This makes it easier to find something if you don’t remember the exact web page address or if you know you recently saw a site, and know what it was about, but don’t remember where exactly it was. Just start typing what you do remember and let Safari do the heavy lifting. Highly convenient and certainly “awesome”. [To misappropriate the term from Mozilla]

When you try out the new Safari URL bar, let us know how it works for you. For more, see our complete iOS 4 feature walkthrough.

iOS 4 bugs

June 22nd, 2010

iOS 4 Folders open

Noticing any bugs or problems with your iPhone or iPod touch post-iOS 4 install? Got any iOS 4 issues? Well, we’ve got 11-pages of them being reported and trouble-shooted over on the TiPb iPhone Forum iOS 4 bugs thread — everything from Google sync woes to pixelated pictures to missing apps to bloated “other” partitions to… well, go check it out for yourself.

We’ll also repeat our standard advice:

  • Delete and re-sync any data or content (like pictures, movies) that seem buggy.
  • Remove and re-add any services (like email accounts) that are causing issues
  • Uninstall and re-install any apps that are giving you problems

And if all else fails, there’s the nuclear option:

  • Restore your iPhone clean (i.e. not from backup).

It’s a huge pain in the @$$, especially if you have tons of settings to re-tweak and content to re-sync (and if a lot of your data doesn’t live in the cloud, but when a whole new version of the OS comes out, it can sometimes be your last, best hope for a fix.

Before you consider anything drastic though, get over to the TiPb iPhone Forum official iOS 4 bugs thread and see if the experts there can’t help get you sorted first.

More iOS4 Compatible Apps Hit the App Store

June 21st, 2010

iphone_4_iOS-4-apps

We let you know a couple days ago there were a few apps that had already been updated via the App Store to support iOS4. Since then we’ve seen a few more roll out.  Some developers have really taken advantage of the new APIs in iOS4.  Others seem to just be adding compatibility at this point.  Let’s hope a lot of them are working on substantial updates.  Hit the jump for some more iOS4 compatible apps!

Evernote

Evernote (version 3.3.5) is one of the first I’ve seen to implement quite a few 4.0 APIs.  Not only does it come complete with fast app switching integration, but your notes will also be able to sync in the background.  This will be extremely useful for users who like to upload pictures.  I’m always doing this when I’m comparing prices.  I’ll take pictures of SKUs from different stores and tag them accordingly which allows me to flip through later and compare which ones are cheaper and which ones have rebates attached, etc.  Much easier than writing a note with all that information.  The down side to that has always been pictures take a bit to sync with the Evernote servers at times and keeping the app open the entire time was somewhat of a pain. Thanks Evernote! (Read more about Evernote and iOS4 here.) [iTunes link]

LinkedIn

For now, it looks like LinkedIn has added support for fast app switching, but I don’t see much more than that at this point.  I’d love to see the LinkedIn app get a lot more intuitive than it is.  Hopefully they’ll be adding more support in future updates.  If you caught anything I didn’t on this one, let us know in the comments! [iTunes link]

Windows Messenger

Not only is this one new to the App Store, it came out of the gate with iOS4 integration built-in.  It also supports alerts for Hotmail as well, so you’ll get notifications in-app when you receive new e-mails via your Hotmail account.  And again, if you see anything worth noting, let us know! [iTunes link]

Pandora

I know a lot of you have been waiting for this one. This update just hit the app store a few short hours ago. Pandora background streaming was demonstrated at WWDC 2010 and lots of users were excited to be able to allow Pandora to finally run in the background. This feature has been available for other mobile platforms for quite a while. [iTunes link]

Loopt

Loopt is another company that’s taken advantage of additional APIs available behind iOS4. Fast app switching, PNS alerts, and grid based navigation are a few of the features the new version of Loopt offers. [iTunes link]

WordPress

One of the most popular blogging engines on the planet comes out on release iOS release day claiming Retina Display support? Even if they’re just scaling text and UI elements, good on them. [iTunes link]

Know of any other iOS 4 compatible, feature-empowered apps that we may have missed? Drop them in comments and we’ll include them in the next round up.

iOS 4 Jailbreak

June 21st, 2010

is there a Jailbreak for iOS 4?

ios 4 jailbreak

iOS 4 Jailbreak is another question that just won’t stop flooding our mailboxes today. Previous versions of iOS 4 beta up to and including the GM have gotten various states of Jailbreak thanks to the efforts of the iPhone Dev Team. Will the final release version work with current Jailbreaks? Will it work on iPhone 4 hardware?

UPDATE 1: The Dev Team has posted that they’re working on it but it will take some time (obviously).

We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.

Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.

If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.

UPDATE 2: And so it begins:

redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). [Download link]

As always, if you’re not sure what any of this means, or what Jailbreaking is, then move along. Nothing to see here. If you need help or want to discuss further, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Jailbreak Forum — that’s where all our ninja hang.

And when/if a full on iOS 4 (release version) Jailbreak hits, we — probably Ally — will be back to tell you all about it.

That is, if you’re planning on Jailbreaking iOS 4?
