mophie juice pack air for iPhone 4 preview

September 2nd, 2010

Dieter’s at the IFA show in Berlin, Germany and he’s scored us a first look at mophie’s upcoming juice pack air for iPhone 4. It’s got soft touch paint and they claim ZERO signal degredation because the entire PCB board is on the bottom, so there are no electronics around the antenna. It’s shipping to Apple now and will be available in “Nationwide retailers” next week for $79.95.

Mophie Juice Pack air for iPhone 4 comes in black, white, red, and green and “virtually doubles your power”. 6 hours talk time, 5 hours internet 3G, and 9 hours on wifi courtesy of a 1500mAh battery. It also sports pass-through USB for power, iTunes sync, and can be switched off when not in use.

What Dieter saw was prototype hardware, but felt very thin and good to him, especially the soft touch finish.

Also being shown off was the juice pack power station, which sports 2.1 Amp output so it can power an iPad. This one rates 3600 mAh and has a USB cable included to charge it. And the Marketplace, which we saw an early version of back at Macworld, is now ramped up with Intuit GoPayment and is available now for $179.95 plus GoPayment service.

Hands-on photos after the break!

Steve Jobs: iPod touch more popular than Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined

September 2nd, 2010

Yesterday during Apple’s annual Special Music Event Steve Jobs announced that the iPod touch was more popular than both Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP… combined. Jobs also said more than 1.5 billion games and entertainment apps have been downloaded by iPod touch devices to date.

However, as every gadget and gaming blog has since pointed out, while iPod touch has sold in the mid tens of millions of units (Apple doesn’t often break them out), Nintendo’s DS series has sold 132 million all on its lonesome, so take this with a “biggest mobile company” type grain of salt.

iOS 4 Ping social music network gallery

September 2nd, 2010

After a few hiccups, Ping, Apple’s new social music network, is up and running on iOS 4 devices. Yesterday we took a quick look at how Ping worked in iTunes 10 and while computers have some advantages, I think I’m preferring it on iPhone right now.

Putting it in the iOS iTunes app is strange of course, until you realize Ping exists primarily to encourage people to buy more iTunes music, so having all those shopping carts handy is in Apple’s best interests. I’m not convinced it’s in mine, especially since load times in iTunes have never been as snappy as they feel in the dedicated Twitter or Facebook apps. And since the outer chrome has to include ways of moving to different iTunes store content, they can’t be used to make navigating Ping any easier (not that there’s much to navigate yet).

Lastly, while it still doesn’t look like anyone but recording artists can share real status or post pics or video, we dull normals can share music, like activities, and comment on likes.

Gallery after the break.

120,000,000 iOS devices sold, 250,000 apps, 6.5 billion downloads – by the numbers

September 2nd, 2010

120,000,000 iOS device sold by September 1, 2010

As usual, Steve Jobs began his Apple music event keynote today by giving a breakdown of iOS devices sold to date — 120,000,000. It took them from June 2007 to June 2010 to reach 100,000,000 and only 3 months to add another 20,000,000 on top of that. Jobs also said they’re activating new devices at a rate of 230,000 a day.

While older, 2007 devices are no longer compatible with iOS 4, iPad apps won’t run on iPhone, and camera apps won’t run on iPad or older iPod touches, that’s still a huge number of broadly compatible devices for developers to target. Case in point…

App Store downloads have hit 6.5 billion, which is an astonishing number. And yes, whoosh, that’s increasing at a rate of 200 a second. There are 250,000 apps in the App Store now, 25,000 of which are iPad apps. Speaking of stores…

In terms of Apple Retail Stores, they now have 300 in 10 countries with one in Spain set to increase both counts soon. On some days they get more than 1 million visitors. They teach 80,000 one-to-one classes a week. Over 50% of Mac buyers are new to the platform.

Apple iPod touch - All kinds of fun commercial

Apple has released new commercials for their updated iPod touch 4 and iPod nano 6. iPod touch – All kinds of fun holds true to its roots — lots of hands doing lots of awesome things, but iPod nano – Travel seems more like a hybrid, including elements previously seen in iPod shuffle commercials — less nano chromatic, more wearable.

iOS 4.1 GM seed

Apple has begun seeding iOS 4.1 Gold Master to developers, the final step before the general availability release promised for next week.

In addition to fixes for proximity sensors, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, it includes Game Center, HD photos, HD YouTube uploads, and TV rentals.

If you’re a developer, head on over to developer.apple.com and start downloading. No doubt the App Store will start taking iOS 4.1 compiled binaries any time now…

Apple introduces iPod touch with Retina Display, FaceTime, HD Video

September 1st, 2010

iPod touch 4 with FaceTime and Retina Display

As part of the 2010 special music event, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced a new iPod touch with Retina Display, HD video recording, FaceTime video calling, Apple A4 chip, 3-axis gyro, and iOS 4.1 with Game Center.

“We’ve put our most advanced technology inside the new iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Whether you’re listening to music, playing games, making FaceTime video calls, browsing the web, capturing HD video or watching TV shows and movies, the new iPod touch with its Retina display, A4 chip and 3-axis gyro is more fun than ever.”

The good news is that the video recording really is 720p. The bad news is that the still photos are only 960×720(!). And yes, it’s thin.

Unlike last year, they’re not letting the previous generation iPod touch linger around as the bargain basement SKU either. Every storage size and price point gets the new features.

Pricing is 8GB/$229. 32GB/$229, and 64GB/$399. (No 128GB model, sorry, iPod classic does linger for that…) and it starts shipping next week.

Anyone getting one?

iTunes song previews doubling to 60 seconds?

August 31st, 2010

Steve Jobs interview D8

At their annual special music event tomorrow, could Steve Jobs announce that Apple’s iTunes song previews are doubling to 60 seconds? That’s what CNET is hearing rumored:

Currently, iTunes offers 30-second snippets of songs, a feature designed to give users a taste of the music to help them decide whether they like it enough to buy. Some users have long complained that half a minute isn’t enough time to really hear a song.

30 seconds has sometimes been enough for me, sometimes not. It depends on which 30 seconds they preview. The first 30 seconds of long, building instrumental intro to a rock song usually doesn’t provide any context for the song itself. Part of the chorus with enough overlap on one side or another and I’m good.

Given the plethora of other announcements we expect, iPod touch 4, iPod nano 6, iOS 4.1, maybe Apple TV/iTV, etc. how important is this one to you?

iLuv case with camera cutout in the center?

August 29th, 2010

ipod case with camera cutout in center

Reader Gerald spotted an iLuv case with camera cutout in the center in a local Marshall’s clothing store:

[The case] was labeled as an iPod Touch 2nd Generation hard shell case made by a company called iLuv. The reason i liked this case so much was because it had a spot for a rear camera, and the dummy cardboard example of the iPod clearly showed what the camera looked like. I snapped a pic as proof.

Now what could that have been doing there?

OS x.1

August 28th, 2010

This Wednesday, at their annual special music event, Apple will most likely introduce the final version of iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch (though probably not for iPad). Apple released the first beta for iOS 4.1 on July 14 and stuck to their every-two-weeks cycle for beta 2 on July 27 and beta 3 on August 3.

What we’ve seen so far includes a new, font-crazy version of Game Center, which was also included in the iOS 4 betas but removed for the general release, and FaceTime connections over email, which will be required for non-phone devices like iPod touch 4.

It will also likely contain bug fixes for the proximity sensor, and hopefully performance fixes for iPhone 3G.

Those features are certainly impressive, those fixes certainly much needed. But is that all we’ll get? There’s no way to know what Apple will do in the future, but we can look at what they’ve done with past iOS x.1 releases for clues…

iOS 3.1 (iPhone 3.1)

iOS 3.1, originally referred to as iPhone 3.1, was released on September 9, 2009 following Apple’s It’s only rock and roll but we like it special music event. It fixed issues with iPhone 3G Wi-Fi and icon display. It also added:

  • Triple click Home for accessibility options
  • Voice control over Bluetooth
  • Remote passcode lock with Find my iPhone
  • Save MMS to camera roll
  • Event location in popup alert
  • Non-destructive video clip trimming
  • Tethered data usage stats
  • Fraud warnings toggle for Safari
  • iTunes account credit display
  • Top Grossing in App Store
  • Genius for apps
  • Genius mixes
  • Copy and paste in Phone and Contacts

iOS 2.1 (iPhone 2.1)

iOS 2.1, originally referred to as iPhone 2.1, was introduced on September 9, 2008 at Apple’s Let’s rock special music event and released on September 12, 2008. It fixed problems with call drops, battery life, backup times, email reliability, 3rd party app installation speeds, SMS performance, contact loading and search, “improved accuracy” of 3G bars (which have since been “corrected” again in iOS 4.0.1). Features included:

  • Screen shot added camera shutter sound
  • Load earlier SMS messages
  • SMS alert repeat
  • Disable Camera in Settings Restrictions
  • Option to wipe data after 10 failed passcode attempts
  • Genius playlist creation
  • Tap icon to pause/resume app install
  • App icons remain in place following on-device update

Note: Unlike iOS 3, where iOS 3.2 was exclusive to iPad, there was an iOS 2.2 (iPhone 2.2) update for iPhone and iPod touch. iPhone 2.2 added Google Street View, Transit and Walking directions, the ability to turn off auto-correct, audio and video podcasts in the iTunes Store app, App Store “rate app on delete” (since removed in iOS 4), the return of Update All for apps, and a rejiggered Safari search bar.

iOS 1.1 (iPhone 1.1)

iOS 1.1 (iPhone 1.1) was originally shown off on the first generation iPod touch on September 14, 2007 during Apple’s The beat goes on special music event, but was released as iOS 1.1.1 (iPhone 1.1.1, or September ‘07 update) for iPhone on September 27. Added were:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store app
  • Louder speaker volume
  • Double click home to launch favorites or iPod controls
  • Double tap space bar for a period (.)
  • Landscape support for Mail attachments
  • Re-ordering for Stocks and Weather items
  • Apple Bluetooth headset (RIP) battery status
  • Disable roaming data
  • Additional passcode lock time settings
  • Adjustable alert volumes

There was no iOS 1.2 (iPhone 1.2) update, but there was a significant iOS 1.1.3 (iPhone 1.1.3 or January ‘08) update shown off at Macworld on January 15, 2008 that added Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather, and Notes to iPod touch (for a price), gave Google Maps the “locate me” function, introduced “jiggly mode” to re-arrange icons, added iTunes gift card redemption on-device, gave lyrics to music, let you add Web Clips to the home screen, enabled multi-person SMS, included Gmail as a default set up type, made the keyboard multitouch, and put chapters, language, etc. into movies.

So what does this mean for iOS 4.1?

Smaller version updates mean smaller feature additions. If you’re holding out hope for a brand new notification system you’ll probably have to wait for next March and the iOS 5 sneak preview event. If Game Center, and FaceTime moving beyond the iPhone, interest you, then you’ll probably have lots to be happy about. It’s always possible we’ll get “One more thing…” but looking back over previous iOS x.1 (iPhone x.1) updates, I’m not holding my breath. Too much.

Hotmail to gain ActiveSync support for iPhone and iPad. Finally.

August 26th, 2010

Hotmail via ActiveSync push for iPhone

CNET is reporting that Microsoft’s Hotmail will finally gain support for… Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Sure, even Google’s had that for a while now, but better embarrassingly late than embarrassingly never, right?

So Hotmail users, very soon you’ll be able to type in your username and password as an Exchange account and enjoy full push support and client/server synchronization. On iOS 4, you’ll even be able to set it up alongside your work Exchange and Gmail ActiveSync accounts, if you have them, and really push things to the limit. (Sorry, couldn’t resist).

Will you be using it?

H.264 goes royalty-free, web to go H.264?

August 26th, 2010

Apple.com HTML5 Showcase

The MPEG LA licensing group has announced that their H.264 video codec standard would be going royalty free in perpetuity for free-to-end-user use. Why does this matter to us? Well, if you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you’re using the H.264 video codec. If you buy video off iTunes, you’re using H.264. If you’re using Safari on iOS or Mac OS for that matter, you’re using H.264 because it’s the only HTML 5 video standard Apple supports. Google and Microsoft support it as well, along with others. Firefox has chosen not to support it for philosophical reasons, however, which has potentially stopped H.264 from becoming the one true HTML 5 standard to unify them all.

Will this change by MPEG LA be enough to get Firefox and everyone else on board? Will it lead to an H.264, HTML 5 video web? Will it relegate Flash to non-video content that requires that level of runtime support (and resources)?

Who knows, but it’s another tiny little step in that direction, and good news for anyone rendering free content for iPhone and iPad support.

Apple testing iOS 4.1 on iPod touch 4, iPad 2, and mystery device?

August 19th, 2010

Apple testing iOS 4.1 alongside next-gen iPod touch, iPad and 'unknown' product

AppleInsider, quoting “people familiar with the matter” says iOS 4.1 is currently being tested by Apple not only on iPhone 4 (currently available to developers) but the upcoming iPod touch 4 refresh, iPad 2, and an unknown mystery device.

iPod touch 4 is pretty much a no-brainer at this point. For the last 3 years Apple has shipped a new iPod touch in the fall along with an x.1 software update, so we’ll consider that a done deal. The iPod 4,1 hardware designation means it will also once again be a major update. Retina display and dual cameras would certainly qualify.

As to iPad 2, also a major update if iProd 2,1 is the proper designator, that might get a camera as well come next spring. However, since Apple hasn’t even introduced an iOS 4.x beta for the current generation iPad, it’s harder to predict what the iOS 4.x situation will be by then. 4.2 to mirror 3.2 last year?

As to the mystery device, that might just be the iOS Apple TV/iTV we keep hearing about.

Hopefully we’ll find out more at Apple traditional fall special music event for iPod and iTunes in the next month or so, but let us know your best guesses below!

iOS used by 100% of multi-platform developers on Millenial network

August 19th, 2010

Millennial Media’s July Mobile Mix report shows that while iOS is still dominant, Android is coming on like a freight train. Millenial’s stats are also one of the few ways to see what’s trending outside the increasingly closed worlds of Google- and Apple-assimilated and controlled ad networks. Here’s the breakdown:

  • iOS was the platform utilized 100% of the time by multi-platform developers on Millenial’s network. Android was second with 75% and RIM in the third position with nearly half developing for their platform.
  • iOS remained the leading OS on our Millenial’s network in July with a 55% share of impressions.
  • Apple ad requests are up 24% month-over-month, 15% since January.
  • iPad ad requests grew 327% month-over-month.
  • Android OS grew another 47% month-over-month. Since January, Android has grown 690%. Android also officially became the number two OS on the Millennial network (surpassing RIM)
