iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad goes Gold Master

Apple has released the final Gold Master (GM) seed of iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad, get it now via developer.apple.com:

iPhone SDK 3.2 GM Seed is now available. Starting today, all iPad apps submitted must be built using this release.

All members of the iPhone Developer Program can submit their iPad apps to iTunes Connect for review and approval. If you did not submit your app during the initial review period, but upload it by March 31, it will be reviewed but may not make the grand opening of the iPad App Store.

Make sure you read the iPhone SDK GM Seed Release Notes before installing and developing with this release.

Furthermore, 9to5Mac notes that an additional email has gone out to developers telling them they need those final apps in for approval by March 31, 5pm PDT. Any time after that and there’s no guarantees your app will be in there for launch.

New Gestures in iPhone SDK 3.2 for iPad?

9to5Mac continues its tradition of tearing through new iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad betas, this time digging into beta 4 and finding:

In the gestures folder, you’ll see two new types of commands (3Tap.plist and LongPress.plist) that are certainly not implemented in the current 3.1 iPhone SDK.

No idea what these mean yet, but if you were Apple, what would you use the triple tap and long press for? (Aside from morse code!)

iPad SDK Settings: Tethering, Voice Mail, MMS, Wikipedia Search

9to5Mac is yet again delving deep into the iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad and this time they’ve turned up settings for internet tethering, voice mail, and MMS settings, as well as a search option for Wikipedia.

Again, whether or not this is legacy code from the iPad’s iPhone heritage, or potential future features we have no way of knowing. Being able to tether to the iPad would be good (at least for international users, since AT&T doesn’t even support iPhone tethering yet…) Being able to tether from the iPhone to the iPad would be even better, but we’re not holding our breath… Likewise voice mail and MMS are interesting to see on a data-only device.

Wikipedia, however, is a natural extension of the built-in, currently Google-centric search and on the popover-enabled iPad Safari would be especially handy. Can we have that for iPhone as well?

Still no sign of Bing, however, though the current Yahoo! option will soon be powered by Microsoft’s search engine anyway…

UPDATED: iPhone SDK 3.2 Shows iPad Camera (Again), Camera Flash and Zoom, Video Chat, Wallpaper Choices

WhenWillApple has found an interesting screen in the just-released iPhone 3.2 SDK for the iPad — one that once again hints at camera functionality.

We don’t want to set anyone up for anticipointment, so we’re seriously not expecting any last minute camera additions before next months iPad launch, but the regular stream of rumors sure isn’t helping!

UPDATE 1: 9to5Mac has found settings for making a picture your Lock Screen background, Home Screen background, or both.

UPDATE 2: MacRumors has found references to camera flash and zoom in the strings, and shows those accept/decline video iChat we linked to previously.

So, did Apple once again intend to include a camera and pull it at the last minute? Could there be a surprise in March or will we have to wait until the 2nd gen iPad to see it again?

Video iChat Icons, Strings in iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad?

9to5mac continues to rip through the iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad and has now come across the images above, which show icons for accepting a declining video chat, as well as strings referencing the same.

Of course, we’ve been teased with the possibility of video iChat on the iPhone going back to Kevin Rose in March, 2008, so while we’re ever hopeful our optimism is also ever cautious on this one.

Still, video iChat sure would be a killer bullet point on iPhone 4.0, wouldn’t it?

iPad Simulator Settings Reveal HTML5 YouTube, File Sharing, Lock Screen Media Controls

9to5mac continues to dive into the iPhone 3.2 Beta 2 SDK and its iPad simulator, this time showing off HTML5 YouTube, file sharing, lock screen media controls, and more.

HTML5 H.264 YouTube video is shown playing right in the iPad Safari browser, just as it does on Mac or Windows. It looks good enough for 9to5mac to wonder if the YouTube app is still needed!

File sharing has an on/off toggle, and TiPb’s really excited about this one. The text reads “File sharing allows you to transfer application files to and from your iPad and computer”, and there’s a (currently empty) header that reads “Applications”.

We’ve already asked for a file repository, sort of like the Camera Roll does now for images, and some apps have gotten in trouble for using the DCIM folder to do just that. And official place to load, share, and save documents and other files would fill a huge functionality gap for iPad and iPhone both.

Lock Screen media controls are interesting, as we saw Apple demonstrate the iPad lock screen woking as a digital photo frame, but it does make sense for watching movies as well.

There are a few more finds, including some new things like built-in Google suggestions in iPad Safari, and some things we’ve already seen in the iPhone like percentage battery readout and Chinese character handwriting input.

9to5Mac has posted up a walkthrough of the iPad’s version of the Safari web browser, running on the iPhone 3.2 SDK’s simulator. Instead of sliding in new screens, iPad Safari uses Apple’s new popover menus to handle bookmarks, search, and other UI tasks.

We have to admit, it’s looking great to us and we can’t wait to get our geeky, multi-touchy hands on the real thing.

4th Generation iPhone Code Named N89; iPod touch G4, N80

Enagdget tipsters, digging deep into the iPad’s iPhone 3.2 SDK and iPhone 3.1.3 firmware, have found more evidence of the 4th generation iPhone (likely to ship this June/July) namely it’s code name — N89.

Buried way inside the platform simulator lies a set of folders dedicated to specific models of iPhone OS-ready devices, including the iPhone 3GS, second generation iPod touch, something called the “K48″ (yep, the codename we were told was the internal name for the iPad), and… the “N89.” Sure, it sounds like a Nokia phone just waiting to happen, but this is — according to our extremely knowledgeable and trusted sources — likely the codename of the next iPhone (previous versions were called the M68, N82, and N88).

There’s also news on the 4th generation iPod touch as well (likely to ship this September):

Apple’s just released firmware (3.1.3) also includes another new model, the “N80,” which we’re told will most likely be the next version of the iPod touch.

Sure, they’re little details for now, but there’s always more to come… it’s really only a matter of time.

iPhone 3.2 SDK on iPad — iChat Video Calling, File Downloads, Telephony Support, Handwriting Keyboard… And Coming to iPhone?

Engadget has been getting tips from deep code divers who are exploring Apple’s latest iPhone 3.2 SDK for the iPad and what they’re finding includes code/hooks for iChat-style video Calling, file downloads from Mobile Safari, support for telephony like SMS and calls, and some prototype support for a “handwriting keyboard”. The video conferencing news is especially intriguing:

We’re told that there are hooks to accept and decline a video conference, flip a video feed (which suggests a front-facing camera) and — most importantly — run the video call in either full screen mode or in just a portion of the screen. That means you’ll be able to chat and do other things at the same time, which could mean there’s at least some type of multitasking going on here.

Could this be another example of the iPad being “unfinished“, or of Apple removing a camera at the last minute — like the iPod touch G3 — because they couldn’t get an implementation that was good enough in time for the big reveal?

Looks like there’s some good news (or good speculation at least) for iPhone owners as well, since the devices all share the same OS code base:

chpwn also tells us [...] both the new landscape orientation for the homescreen and keyboard support appear to be destined for the iPhone itself when 3.2 comes out.

Apple to Developers: Start Developing Your iPad Apps Today… with iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta (Sigh)

Apple has sent a note out to iPhone and iPod touch developers encouraging them to start developing iPad apps today… with the iPhone 3.2 SDK beta (!)

iPhone SDK 3.2 beta is now available to all iPhone Developer Standard and Enterprise Program Members from the iPhone Dev Center.

The iPhone Dev Center also provides additional resources including the iPad Programming Guide, iPad Human Interface Guidelines, Preparing Universal Applications, and sample code.

Log in to the iPhone Dev Center and start developing innovative applications for iPad today.

And yeah, Apple said from the beginning that iPhone 3.2 beta was exclusive to the iPad, but come on Apple, it’s iPhone 3.2, are you going to throw the actual device, the one that hasn’t seen even a hint of an update for months, a little love here?

Or are we going to have to wait for an iPhone 4.0 beta in March?

iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad – VoIP, External Displays, Shared File Directory, 6 Apps in Dock

MacRumors is reporting that the new iPhone 3.2 SDK, now available via developer.apple.com, but (currently?) only supporting the just-announced iPad, brings a couple interesting new features to the table tablet.

  • External displays, which had potential but no official APIs in previous iPhone SDKs, looks like they’ve gone legit. Video out to come? No word on an HDMI cable still…
  • Shared file directory, which mounts on both Mac and PC. It isn’t the Mobile Finder we’ve wanted, but it sounds like it might make getting docs on and off a whole lot easier.
  • Universal apps, which means developers can make a single build that will support both the smaller iPhone and iPod touch, and the bigger iPad.

In addition, MacRumors says iCall Free VoIP [Free - iTunes link] has told them:

With the latest revisions Apple has made to the iPhone developer agreement and Software Development Kit, iCall for the iPhone and iPod Touch now enabled unrestricted free local and long distance calling over 3G data networks.

Finally (for now), 9to5mac shows that while the demo iPad only had 4 apps in its dock, like the iPhone, the SDK simulator has room for 6. Makes sense given the extra width. (Pictures above)
