iTunes 9.0.1 Fix the Out-of-Order Episodes Bug for You?

September 23rd, 2009

Podcast order bug fixed

With the release of the iTunes 9.0.1 update last night, we downloaded it and proceeded to run some tests, and lo and behold, it seems that annoying out-of-order podcast bug is gone for us.

You remember the one, where you’d sync a number of episodes and instead of being sorted numerically, up or down, (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4) they were randomly assigned (i.e. 1, 4, 2, 3).

If you’ve installed iTunes 9.0.1, and tested out the sync sequencing, let us know if you’re back in order as well.

Apple Seeking More Info From iPhone 3.1 Users Reporting Poor Battery Life

September 20th, 2009

40 -0700-1

An undisclosed number of users who have posted on Apple’s discussion boards about poor battery life following the iPhone 3.1 software update are being contacted by AppleCare helpdesk with a hefty list of 11 follow-up questions. These questions focus primarily on the usual battery culprits, email (especially push), WiFi and Bluetooth, and App Store apps. Number 10, asking “When you notice a power drop, does it seem to be a legitimate power drop, or rather an issue with the battery icon indicator?”, is certainly interesting.

The note also contains an attachment which, when double-clicked, installs what looks like an unsigned profile, similar to what is provided (in signed form) by developers using Ad Hoc provisioning for beta testing. (We’re guessing there’s a reason for it not to be signed, but — note to Apple — signing would make us feel so much warmer and fuzzier about it). This profile enables Battery Life Logging on the iPhone.

Once enabled, the iPhone will sync power logs back via iTunes, and they ask that those logs be sent back to Apple. (Due to the size of the logs, they recommend users not go for a few days without syncing, and provide instructions on turning off Battery Life Logging once the information has been accumulated.

AppleCare as contacted Apple discussion board users in the past surrounding other issues, like the iPhone 3G ringer following 3.0, so hopefully this means Apple is continuing to look into all major issues surrounding iPhone 3.1, especially the random lock ups and shut downs (dubbed “coma”).

According to our recent iPhone 3.1 battery life poll, 24% of you are experiencing worse battery life under iPhone 3.1, with 61% reporting roughly the same battery life, and 11% reporting much better battery life. If you’re one of the 24 percent’ers, let us know if you get contacted by Apple and make it any progress towards resolving the problem (for some tips from TiPb, see our previous How To: Trouble Shoot Battery Life post).

[Thanks to G. for the tip!]

iPhone 3.1 Bugs: Got Random Freeze or Shut Down?

September 17th, 2009

iphone_reboot

Post one bug, and everyone demands you post another even more frustrating one. Our bad, should have had this up already. Seems iPhone 3.1 users, mostly iPhone 3G users from what we can make out, are experiencing random freezes and complete shutdowns of their iPhones, and nothing, not reboots, not restores are fixing it.

TiPb did hear a few accounts of freezes during the 3.1 beta on all versions of the iPhone, but that’s the point of betas — to identify and fix bugs before the software goes primetime.

Seemingly random, intermittent bugs, however, can be some of the toughest to figure out, especially for users, so if you’re suffering from randomly freezing or shutting-down iPhones, let us know which device, and any pertinent details like clean 3.1 install, restore from backup, etc. and if you’ve stumbled onto any fixes of the more-than-temporary variety, please do share.

iPhone 3.1 Bugs: Podcasts Out of Order

September 17th, 2009

iphone 3.1 bugs podcasts unsorted

Instead of the iPhone’s built-in iPod app sorting podcasts chronologically up or down (newest to oldest, or oldest to newest), iPhone 3.1 users are seeing… no logical sequence that can be made sense of. Indeed, some of you let us know because the lack of order made you think your podcasts weren’t updating at all. Rest assured, it’s not you.

To be clear: You’re not out of order. Apple’s out of order! All these [redacted] podcasts are out of order!

If you’re having the same random podcast listings — or better yet, if you’ve come up with a solution or work around that’s better than just hunting for the blue “new” dot — let us know in the comments.

[Thanks to everyone who brought this to our attention]

How’s Your Battery Life with iPhone 3.1?

September 16th, 2009

Push Notification 20% Hit on Battery Life?

So, how’s your battery life doing under iPhone 3.1? If you jumped on it immediately last Wednesday, or had a few days to try it out at least, have you noticed any big changes? Much better? Much worse? Or is it pretty much the same?

Yeah, we ask this every time there’s a new firmware, but that’s just because Apple seems to be tweaking things every time there’s a new firmware.

So, win, lose, or draw, let us know how it’s working for you. And if you’re having battery problems, remember to check out TiPb’s How To: Troubleshoot iPhone Battery Life Problems guide.

Skype Has Taken Over Canadian App Store Categories

September 14th, 2009

Canadian App Store taken over by Skype

Yes, the Canadian App Store Categories tab really is all-Skype, all the time and has been for me since just after iPhone 3.1 launched last Wednesday (and no, the irony isn’t lost on us). Since App Store is fed by the web, I figured Apple would realize it and fix whatever feed needed fixing, but so far no such luck.

I tried TUAW’s workaround — switching to the US App Store an back, but iTunes intercepted me saying I couldn’t change stores until I’d spent whatever iTunes credit I had left in my account, and my rentals expired (I don’t currently have any rentals — the only one expired last weekend).

So I’m back to hoping Apple realizes it and fixes it, but if anyone does come up with a repeatable user-end fix, do let all of us Canadians know in the comments.

iPhone 3.1 Encryption Enforcement Fix Causing Problems for iPhone 3G, 2G Exchange 2007 Users

September 10th, 2009

iphone 3.1 Exchange Broken

iPhone 3.1 apparently fixes a bug that didn’t properly enforce Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP1 encryption policies, and that looks to be causing problems for users of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G (and likely first and second gen iPod touch users as well).

While the iPhone 3GS supports Exchange encryption and is thus unaffected, the previous generation devices reportedly do not, leading to the error shown above.

Outside buying an iPhone 3GS or getting your Exchange Admin to turn off the encryption requirement (good luck with that!) we’re not sure if there’s a fix for this fix yet.

If you’ve run into the problem, however, drop us a note in the comments.
